RJ 30 which city: Rajsamand, Nathdwara and the district office

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 8 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

RJ 30 which city comes down to Rajsamand, the lake town in the Mewar region about 62 km north of Udaipur. The code covers the whole of Rajsamand district, formed from Udaipur district on 10 April 1991, so plates from Nathdwara, Kumbhalgarh, Amet, Deogarh, Bhim and Railmagra also read RJ 30. The district has no second office code of its own.

Key takeaways

  • RJ 30 is Rajsamand, a marble town of about 68,000 people (2011) beside Rajsamand Lake.
  • One code serves all seven tehsils, including the temple town of Nathdwara.
  • Rajsamand split from Udaipur in 1991, so some older local vehicles still carry RJ 27.
  • No pre-1989 letter series is listed for RJ 30, because the district did not exist then.
  • We could not confirm the office address with the department, so check the Rajasthan Transport Department site before you travel.

RJ 30 which city is it?

The short answer to RJ 30 which city is Rajsamand, a town in the Mewar belt of southern Rajasthan. RJ 30 is the number given to the transport office at the district headquarters, and any car, bike, tractor or truck first registered there carries it, followed by a letter series and four digits.

How to split a Rajsamand number

Take an illustrative plate like RJ 30 CA 4321. RJ names the state, 30 names the office, CA is the running series and 4321 is the vehicle’s own number. Only the first two pieces tell you where the registration happened.

A district code, not a city code

People search for a city, but the number really belongs to an office whose area is the whole district. A jeep from Deogarh or a bike from Railmagra wears RJ 30 just as one from Rajsamand town does.

Where is Rajsamand, and how does Kankroli fit in?

Rajsamand lies roughly 62 km from Udaipur at about 547 metres above sea level. The 2011 census counted 67,798 people in the city. It takes its name from Rajsamand Lake, the large reservoir built across the Gomti river between 1662 and 1676 by Maharana Raj Singh.

Kankroli on the lake shore

Kankroli is the older settlement on the lake’s edge, and the marble pavilions of Nau Chauki on the dam face towards it. Locals often use the two names together; for registration, both sit under RJ 30.

What the town is known for

Rajsamand is a centre of marble and granite cutting. The Dariba, Sindesar Khurd and Zawar mines nearby are major sources of zinc and silver, which is why heavy trucks with RJ 30 plates are so common on the district’s roads.

Which tehsils does the RTO office Rajsamand cover?

The RTO office Rajsamand serves a district of about 11.6 lakh people (2011) spread over seven tehsils. Unlike Kota or Jalore, Rajsamand has no extra sub-office code, so every tehsil feeds into the same RJ 30 series.

Tehsils near the district edge

Bhim and Deogarh are among the smaller towns of the district. Even where Beawar or Bhilwara is closer, owners with a Rajsamand district address still receive RJ 30, not RJ 36 or RJ 06.

Southern and western tehsils

Nathdwara and Kumbhalgarh draw the most visitors. Taxis and tempo travellers based in these towns usually carry RJ 30 commercial plates.

Is Nathdwara an RJ 30 town?

Yes. Nathdwara, 48 km north-east of Udaipur, is a tehsil of Rajsamand district, and Wikipedia gives its registration as RJ 30. The town is famous for the Shrinathji temple, whose idol was brought from Govardhan in 1672, and for the 369 ft Statue of Belief opened in October 2022.

Why visitors get confused

Many pilgrims reach Nathdwara through Udaipur and assume it falls under RJ 27. It does not: the town moved to Rajsamand district in 1991.

Temple-town traffic

Pilgrims arrive from many states, so you will see plenty of outside plates in the bazaar, but vehicles owned by local residents show RJ 30.

How did Rajsamand get RJ 30 after 1991?

Rajsamand district was formed on 10 April 1991, when seven tehsils were taken out of Udaipur district. The original codes RJ 01 to RJ 27 had already gone to the older districts in alphabetical order, so the new district was given a number from the later series that began at RJ 28: in its case, RJ 30.

Comparison of the RTO office Rajsamand code RJ 30 with the parent Udaipur code RJ 27
Rajsamand was carved out of Udaipur district, so older vehicles there may still read RJ 27.

Old Udaipur numbers stay put

A registration mark normally stays with a vehicle for life. A tractor first registered in Kankroli in the 1980s may still carry an Udaipur number today unless it was re-registered.

Same day as Baran

Baran district in Hadoti was created on the same date, 10 April 1991, and holds RJ 28. Dausa’s RJ 29 falls between the two codes.

Does RJ 30 have a pre-1989 letter series?

No. Wikipedia’s RTO list shows no old three-letter series for RJ 30. Before 1989, vehicles in this area were registered at Udaipur, which used series such as RJY, RSY, RRY and RNY, with taxis in the RST 6001 to 7000 block.

Spotting a vintage plate

An old Ambassador or truck from Rajsamand may wear one of those Udaipur series. A Vahan search shows whether the record was ever moved into the database.

Which codes border the Rajsamand RTO code?

The Rajsamand RTO code sits in Udaipur division and touches five other districts. Udaipur lies south, Chittorgarh south-east, Bhilwara east and north-east, Beawar north and Pali to the north-west across the Aravallis.

Where will you see RJ 30 plates on the road?

RJ 30 plates are most common inside the district and around its big sights. Kumbhalgarh fort, a UNESCO site since 2013 with a wall about 36 km long, and the Haldighati pass, where the 1576 battle was fought, both lie inside the district.

Tourist circuits

Jeeps and cabs running day trips to Kumbhalgarh, Haldighati and Nathdwara are often RJ 30 vehicles, even when the trip starts in Udaipur.

Mining and marble trucks

Marble from the town’s cutting units and output from the Dariba and Sindesar Khurd mines leave by road, so heavy RJ 30 goods vehicles turn up well beyond the district.

What can you get done at the Rajsamand transport office?

The Rajsamand office handles the same work as other district offices: new registrations, ownership transfers, duplicate RCs, adding or ending a loan entry, NOCs, fitness checks for commercial vehicles and driving licence tests. Most of it starts online, with a visit kept for inspection or testing.

Vehicle work

Registration, transfer, address change, hypothecation, fitness certificates and NOCs for moving a vehicle to another state all go through Vahan first.

Licence work

Learner’s tests, driving tests, renewals and duplicates go through Sarathi, the licence portal, with the slot booked at the office for your address.

Where is the RJ 30 office located?

We could not confirm the office address from the Rajasthan Transport Department itself. Private vehicle sites list it on Sundarcha Road, Rajsamand, but that is an unverified listing, so we do not print a phone number or timings. Check the department’s office list before you go.

Trust your appointment slip

The receipt you get after booking online names the office and your time slot, and it is the safest guide to where you must turn up.

Beware of agent numbers

Directory pages often show mobile numbers of private agents. Use contacts published by the department.

How do you check an RJ 30 vehicle online?

A plate only hints at where a vehicle came from. To be sure, enter the full number on Vahan or in the mParivahan app. The record shows the registering authority, model, fuel, registration date and validity, with the owner’s name partly hidden.

Four steps to check an RJ 30 number plate online on Vahan or mParivahan
Only the two digits after RJ tell you the office; the letters just count upward.
  1. Spot the state letters. RJ at the front of the plate means the vehicle is registered in Rajasthan.
  2. Spot the office number. 30 after RJ points to the Rajsamand district transport office.
  3. Search the full number. Type the complete registration number into Vahan or the mParivahan app.
  4. Match it to the vehicle. Compare the registering office, model, chassis and engine details with the vehicle in front of you.

Decode another plate

If the details differ

When the chassis digits or model do not match the record, walk away from the deal and report a suspected stolen vehicle to the police.

Does a car from another state need an RJ 30 number?

Only after a long stay. Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act says a vehicle kept in another state for more than 12 months needs a new registration mark there. A marble trader moving from Gujarat to Rajsamand would apply once that limit is crossed.

The usual route

The owner gets an NOC from the home-state office, then applies in Rajasthan; with a Rajsamand address, the new number would start with RJ 30.

Short visits

A pilgrim’s car parked in Nathdwara for a few weeks keeps its own state plate.

Which RJ 30 mix-ups should you avoid?

Most mistakes come from treating Nathdwara or Kumbhalgarh as part of Udaipur, or from reading “30” as a form number. A Vahan search settles every case in under a minute.

RJ 30 and Form 30

Form 30 is the ownership transfer form used at every RTO. It has nothing to do with the RJ 30 code.

Rajsamand or Udaipur?

An older vehicle with RJ 27 can still belong to a Rajsamand owner, because the district once sat inside Udaipur.
