RTO Ahmedabad offices, GJ codes and Gujarat vehicle services
RTO Ahmedabad is not one building but three registering offices. GJ 01 at Subhash Bridge, Sabarmati covers the western city talukas, GJ 27 at Vastral covers the eastern talukas, and GJ 38 at Bavla covers rural Ahmedabad. Most applications start online on the national Vahan and Sarathi portals, and you visit the office that matches your address only for checks, tests or document verification.
Key takeaways
- GJ 01 is the Ahmedabad West office at Subhash Bridge, Sabarmati (PIN 380027 in directory listings).
- GJ 27 is the Ahmedabad East office at Mahadev Nagar Tekra, Vastral, serving Maninagar, Asarwa and Vatva talukas.
- GJ 38 at Bavla handles rural talukas such as Sanand, Viramgam, Dholka and Dholera.
- Gujarat's code list runs from GJ 01 to GJ 40; GJ 28 and GJ 29 are listed as not allocated.
- Vehicle and licence work goes through Vahan and Sarathi; the state Commissionerate of Transport (COT) sets local rules.
- Phone numbers and timings differ between directories, so confirm them on the COT Gujarat site before you travel.

What is RTO Ahmedabad and how many offices does it have?
RTO Ahmedabad is the name people use for the Regional Transport Offices that register vehicles and issue licences in Ahmedabad district. There are three registering offices, each with its own code: GJ 01 for the west of the city, GJ 27 for the east and GJ 38 for the rural talukas.

Why one district has three codes
Ahmedabad is Gujarat’s largest city, and one counter could not handle every new car, scooter and licence test. The state split the district by taluka, so each office takes a fixed area. The code on the plate tells you which office first registered the vehicle.
What all three offices share
All three work under the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat and use the same national software. A fee paid on Vahan is the same at Sabarmati or Vastral, and the forms, documents and online steps do not change from one office to the next.
How this page is organised
The first sections cover the offices and their codes. Later sections explain Gujarat plates, the full GJ code list, vehicle searches and the state portals. For the national picture of registration services, see our Vahan and RTO services guide.
| Code | Office | Talukas covered |
|---|---|---|
| GJ 01 | Ahmedabad West, Subhash Bridge | Vejalpur, Sabarmati, Ghatlodiya, part of Daskroi |
| GJ 27 | Ahmedabad East, Vastral | Maninagar, Asarwa, Vatva, part of Daskroi |
| GJ 38 | Ahmedabad Rural, Bavla | Bavla, Sanand, Viramgam, Detroj-Rampura, Mandal, Dholka, Dhandhuka, Dholera, part of Daskroi |
Where is the RTO office at Subhash Bridge, Sabarmati?
The GJ 01 office is listed in directories as RTO Office, Subhash Bridge, Sabarmati, Ahmedabad 380027. It takes its name from the nearby Subhash Bridge over the Sabarmati river, which is why locals often just call it “Subhash Bridge RTO”.
Reaching the Sabarmati office
The office is on the western bank, so residents of Ranip, Chandkheda, Ghatlodiya and Vadaj have the shortest trip.
What people usually go there for
Owners from the western talukas come here for registration checks, ownership transfers, hypothecation changes and licence tests. Buyers of new vehicles rarely visit, because dealers in Gujarat register most new vehicles on Vahan and hand over the number directly.
Where is the RTO office Vastral?
The RTO office Vastral is the Ahmedabad East office that issues GJ 27 numbers. Directory listings give the GJ 27 RTO address as Mahadev Nagar Tekra, Vastral, Ahmedabad 380023; many people search for it as RTO Road, Vastral, after the approach road. It serves the eastern half of the city, across the river from Subhash Bridge.

Who should go to Vastral
If your RC or Aadhaar address is in Maninagar, Asarwa or Vatva taluka, or the eastern part of Daskroi, your vehicle work is normally handled at Vastral.
Why Vastral was opened
Before Ahmedabad East existed, eastern residents had to cross the city to Sabarmati. A second office cut queues at Subhash Bridge and shortened travel for the fast-growing eastern suburbs along the Sardar Patel Ring Road.
Where is the Bavla RTO for rural Ahmedabad?
The GJ 38 office at Bavla serves the rural side of the district. Directory listings place it at Amrutbaug, near Swaminarayan Gate, Bavla, Ahmedabad 382220. Its area runs from Sanand and Viramgam in the west to Dholka, Dhandhuka and Dholera in the south.
Industrial growth around Sanand
Sanand’s car plants and the Dholera special investment region brought many new vehicles and transporters to these talukas. That is a large part of why rural Ahmedabad needed its own registering office instead of sending everyone into the city.
More about GJ 38
If you only want to know where a GJ 38 vehicle comes from, the short answer is rural Ahmedabad. Our page on GJ 38 which city goes through the code and its talukas in detail.
Which RTO office Ahmedabad serves your area?
The right RTO office Ahmedabad depends on the taluka in your address proof, not on which office is closest to your workplace. West-bank talukas go to Subhash Bridge, east-bank talukas go to Vastral and the outer rural talukas go to Bavla.
Quick area guide
As a rough guide, residents of Sabarmati, Ghatlodiya and Vejalpur talukas on the west bank use GJ 01. Maninagar, Naroda, Nikol, Vatva and Odhav use GJ 27. Sanand, Viramgam, Dholka and Dholera use GJ 38. Edge areas in Daskroi taluka can go either way.
When the portal picks the office
When you apply on Vahan or Sarathi, the portal usually fixes the office from your PIN code and address. If it shows an office you did not expect, check the address you entered before you book; a wrong taluka means a wasted trip.
GJ 01 which city does the code belong to?
GJ 01 is Ahmedabad. It was the first code in Gujarat’s list and today belongs to the Ahmedabad West office at Subhash Bridge.
Why Ahmedabad got number one
Ahmedabad was the largest city when Gujarat’s codes were assigned, so it took the first slot. Mehsana, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Surat followed as GJ 02 to GJ 05.
Is every GJ 01 car from Ahmedabad today?
The code shows where a vehicle was first registered. A GJ 01 car may now be owned by someone in Vadodara or Pune, because the number stays with the vehicle when it is sold within the state and often when it moves out.
What is the GJ 01 RTO code used for?
The GJ 01 RTO code identifies registrations handled by the Subhash Bridge office. You see it on plates, on RC cards, in Vahan search results and on insurance policies, where it helps the insurer price the premium for the city zone.
Where the code appears in records
On an RC the code is the first part of the registration mark, such as GJ 01 followed by series letters and digits. On Vahan screens the office name “Ahmedabad” appears beside it, and dealers enter it when they register a new vehicle for a western-taluka buyer.
What is the GJ 27 RTO code?
The GJ 27 RTO code belongs to Ahmedabad East, the Vastral office. It was added later than GJ 01 when the eastern city was split off, which is why it sits between Vyara (GJ 26) and the unused GJ 28 in the state list.
Reading a GJ 27 plate
A plate such as GJ 27 followed by two letters and four digits was registered at Vastral. The letters are a running series.
GJ 27 which district is it?
GJ 27 is in Ahmedabad district. It is a second urban office of the same district rather than a district of its own. People ask “GJ 27 which district” because most Gujarat codes match one whole district, and Ahmedabad is one of the exceptions.
Other split districts in Gujarat
Surat and Kutch are split the same way. Surat City uses GJ 05 and the eastern talukas use GJ 19 Bardoli, while Kutch uses GJ 12 Bhuj in the west and GJ 39 Anjar in the east.
Why this matters on forms
District drop-downs on government forms will show “Ahmedabad” for both GJ 01 and GJ 27. The office field is where the difference appears, so pick “Ahmedabad East” when your taluka is on the eastern side.
Which areas does GJ 27 RTO cover?
The GJ 27 RTO covers Maninagar, Asarwa and Vatva talukas plus part of Daskroi, according to the code list we used. In practice that means most of eastern Ahmedabad, from Naroda and Kubernagar down to Isanpur, Narol and the Vatva industrial estate.
Growing eastern suburbs
Vastral, Nikol, Naroda and Ramol saw heavy housing growth near the Ring Road. New residents there should register or re-register vehicles at GJ 27, not at the old Subhash Bridge office they may remember from earlier years.
Commercial vehicles in the east
Vatva and Odhav host large industrial estates, so the GJ 27 office handles many goods vehicle fitness checks and permit-related visits. Commercial owners should check whether their fitness test is booked at the inspection centre or the office itself.
What is the RTO Ahmedabad contact number?
We could not confirm an RTO Ahmedabad contact number on an official page. Insurance and car-portal directories print at least three different landline numbers for Subhash Bridge and Vastral, and they disagree with each other, so we have chosen not to publish any of them.
Where to find a working number
The Commissionerate of Transport publishes office contacts on its website, and the Parivahan site lists state transport contacts.
Is there an RTO Ahmedabad website?
There is no separate RTO Ahmedabad website. The Ahmedabad offices appear in the office list on the Gujarat Commissionerate’s site, and all their services are delivered through the national Parivahan portals. Sites that call themselves the “Ahmedabad RTO website” are usually private directories.
How to spot unofficial sites
Official pages end in gov.in. Private sites may charge “service fees”, ask for documents by WhatsApp or promise faster appointments.
Using Parivahan for Ahmedabad
On Vahan, choose Gujarat and then your Ahmedabad office. On Sarathi, choose Gujarat and pick the licensing office that matches your address. The same login works for all three offices.
What is the RTO Gujarat website?
The RTO Gujarat website is the Commissionerate of Transport’s site at cot.gujarat.gov.in. It carries the office list, circulars and state fee notices. Applications, payments and appointments are handled on the national Vahan and Sarathi portals that Gujarat uses.

What you will find on the state site
Expect office addresses, transport notices, state-specific rules and links into the online services.
When the state site will not load
Government sites can be slow or blocked on some networks, including from outside India. If cot.gujarat.gov.in does not open, try again later or use parivahan.gov.in directly; the online services do not depend on the state site being up.
| Portal | Use it for | Address |
|---|---|---|
| COT Gujarat | Office list, state notices, circulars | cot.gujarat.gov.in |
| Vahan | Registration, transfer, RC services, fancy numbers | vahan.parivahan.gov.in |
| Sarathi | Learner licence, driving licence, renewals | sarathi.parivahan.gov.in |
| e-Challan | Checking and paying traffic challans | echallan.parivahan.gov.in |
What is COT Gujarat?
COT Gujarat stands for the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat, the state body that runs every RTO and ARTO office. People often call it the Gujarat Motor Vehicle Department, but its official name is the Commissionerate. It is headed by the Commissioner of Transport and is based at Dr Jivraj Mehta Bhavan in Gandhinagar, according to public registration listings.
What the Commissionerate controls
It sets state fees and taxes notified by the government, assigns office codes, supervises inspectors and issues circulars on things like dealer registration and fitness testing. Codes such as GJ 40 Tharad are allocated by the Commissionerate when new offices open.
COT is not GSRTC
The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation runs buses. It is a separate body under the state’s ports and transport department.
What does the Transport Department Gujarat do?
The Transport Department Gujarat, working through the Commissionerate, applies the Motor Vehicles Act in the state. It registers vehicles, issues licences, collects road tax, grants permits and enforces fitness and pollution norms through the RTO and ARTO network.
Central law, state rules
The Motor Vehicles Act is a central law, but each state frames its own rules and tax rates under it.
Enforcement on the road
Transport inspectors check permits, overloading and fitness on highways. Most city e-challans, however, come from the police camera network; our guide to e challan Ahmedabad explains how to check and pay those.
What do people mean by Gujarat motor?
“Gujarat motor” is an ambiguous search. Most people typing it want the state’s motor vehicle rules or the transport department, some want dealers or garages with “Gujarat Motors” in the name, and a few want the Gujarat Motor Vehicles Tax Act. We cover only the government side here.
Gujarat Motor Vehicles Tax Act
Road tax in Gujarat is charged under the state’s motor vehicles tax law. Rates depend on vehicle type and price and are notified by the state, so check the Commissionerate’s current notice rather than an old table on a dealer site.
Private businesses with the name
Shops and dealerships named “Gujarat Motor” or “Gujarat Motors” are private firms. They have no link to the RTO, and we do not list or rate them.
How does Gujarat vehicle registration work?
Gujarat vehicle registration follows the national Vahan process. For a new vehicle, the dealer uploads details, collects tax and fees, and the RTO approves the number. For used, transferred or out-of-state vehicles, the owner applies online and attends the office if a check is needed.
- Find your office. Match your taluka to GJ 01, GJ 27 or GJ 38 using the table above.
- Apply online. Start the service on Vahan for vehicles or Sarathi for licences and pay the fee there.
- Book a slot. Pick an appointment at your Ahmedabad office if the service needs a visit.
- Visit with originals. Carry the receipt, originals and self-attested copies on the booked date.
- Track the status. Follow the application number online until the RC or licence is issued.
Dealer point registration
In Gujarat, authorised dealers register most new private vehicles at the showroom through Vahan. The buyer gets the number before delivery and rarely sees the RTO.
Vehicles from other states
A vehicle brought from another state needs a no objection certificate from the old RTO and, after the allowed period, re-registration with Gujarat tax paid. The new Gujarat number depends on your Ahmedabad taluka.
What is GJ registration?
GJ registration simply means a vehicle registered in Gujarat. Every such vehicle carries GJ, then a two-digit office code, then series letters and a four-digit number. Bharat series vehicles are the exception: they carry BH numbers even when owned in Gujarat.
GJ no plate and BH numbers
A GJ no plate search usually means exactly this kind of Gujarat number. A BH number, by contrast, is meant for people who move between states for work, such as central government staff and eligible private employees. It is issued through Vahan with tax paid in two-year blocks, and it does not show a Gujarat office code.
How do you read a Gujarat registration number?
A Gujarat registration number has four parts. GJ is the state, the next two digits are the office, the letters are a series and the last four digits are the vehicle’s own number. Only the first two parts tell you anything about the place.

Use the plate decoder
What the series letters show
Series letters roughly show when a vehicle was registered at that office.
What does Gujarat parsing mean?
“Gujarat parsing” is a misspelling of Gujarat passing, the everyday phrase for a vehicle registered in Gujarat. When someone says a car is “GJ passing” or “Ahmedabad passing”, they mean its number was issued by a Gujarat or Ahmedabad RTO.
Where the word passing comes from
“Passing” comes from the old idea of a vehicle being passed fit and registered by the RTO. Buyers of used cars ask about it because the passing affects which office handles a transfer and, for a car from outside Gujarat, whether re-registration is needed.
Passing and insurance
Insurers ask for the registering RTO because premiums vary by zone. An Ahmedabad passing car is priced for the Ahmedabad zone even if the owner now lives elsewhere in the state.
What does a number plate Gujarat look like?
A number plate Gujarat issues today is a high security registration plate: aluminium, with a chromium hologram, a laser-coded serial number and the “IND” mark. Private vehicles use black letters on white, commercial vehicles black on yellow and electric vehicles use green plates.

HSRP in Gujarat
High security plates are required for all vehicles under central rules. For how the plates are made, ordered and fitted, see our guide to the HSRP number plate.
Plates that cause fines
Fancy fonts, stickers over letters and missing hologram plates can lead to a challan.
Which codes appear on a number plate Ahmedabad?
A number plate Ahmedabad registration will show GJ 01, GJ 27 or GJ 38. Government vehicles and state buses may show GJ 18, because Gandhinagar registers all GSRTC buses, which is why many people wrongly assume GJ 18 belongs to Ahmedabad.
Seeing GJ 18 in Ahmedabad
Gandhinagar is the twin city next door, so GJ 18 cars are common on Ahmedabad roads. Our page on GJ 18 which city explains that code fully.
RTO number list Gujarat: all codes from GJ 01 to GJ 20
This RTO number list Gujarat table shows the first twenty codes, which mostly belong to the older districts. Use it to match a plate to an office. The rest of the list follows in the next section.

| Code | Office | Code | Office |
|---|---|---|---|
| GJ 01 | Ahmedabad West | GJ 11 | Junagadh |
| GJ 02 | Mehsana | GJ 12 | Bhuj (Kutch West) |
| GJ 03 | Rajkot | GJ 13 | Surendranagar |
| GJ 04 | Bhavnagar | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| GJ 05 | Surat | GJ 15 | Valsad |

| GJ 09 | Himmatnagar (Sabarkantha) | GJ 19 | Bardoli (Surat East) |
| GJ 10 | Jamnagar | GJ 20 | Dahod |
Codes with whole districts
Most of these codes cover one whole district, such as Mehsana, Rajkot or Jamnagar. The exceptions are Ahmedabad, Surat and Kutch, which are split between two or three offices.
Codes with their own pages
Several of these codes have their own pages on this site. Searchers who ask about GJ 15 and the codes near it can read our guide to GJ 11 which city, which covers Junagadh and Valsad in detail.
Gujarat RTO registration numbers from GJ 21 to GJ 40
The second half of the Gujarat RTO registration numbers covers districts created later and offices split out of bigger districts. GJ 28 and GJ 29 are shown as not allocated in the list we used, and GJ 40 Tharad is the newest code.

| Code | Office | Code | Office |
|---|---|---|---|
| GJ 21 | Navsari | GJ 31 | Modasa (Aravalli) |
| GJ 22 | Rajpipla (Narmada) | GJ 32 | Veraval (Gir Somnath) |
| GJ 23 | Anand | GJ 33 | Botad |
| GJ 24 | Patan | GJ 34 | Chhota Udaipur |
| GJ 25 | Porbandar | GJ 35 | Lunawada (Mahisagar) |
| GJ 26 | Vyara (Tapi) | GJ 36 | Morbi |
| GJ 27 | Ahmedabad East | GJ 37 | Khambhaliya (Devbhoomi Dwarka) |
| GJ 28 | Not allocated | GJ 38 | Bavla (Ahmedabad Rural) |
| GJ 29 | Not allocated | GJ 39 | Anjar (Kutch East) |
| GJ 30 | Ahwa (Dang) | GJ 40 | Tharad (Vav-Tharad) |
The GJ 28 and GJ 29 question
Some directories link GJ 28 to Pal in Surat and GJ 29 to Darjipura in Vadodara. The list we used marks both as reserved and not allocated. If you see one of these codes on a plate, search the full number on Vahan to see the office on record.
The newest code
GJ 40 was created for Tharad after the new Vav-Tharad district was carved out of Banaskantha in 2025. Vehicles registered earlier in that area keep their GJ 08 Palanpur numbers.
How does a Gujarat RTO number search work?
A Gujarat RTO number search means typing a full GJ registration into Vahan’s “Know Your Vehicle Details” service or the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering office, model, fuel, registration date and the validity of fitness, insurance and pollution certificates.

What you need to search
You need the full registration number and a mobile number for the OTP login. The search is free on the official portals. Paid apps use the same data, sometimes with ads or extra fields of doubtful accuracy.
More on vehicle searches
For the national version of this service and how to read each field, see our guide to RTO vehicle information.
How do you do a Gujarat RTO number check?
A Gujarat RTO number check is the same lookup used to confirm that a plate matches its papers. Buyers of used cars run it to make sure the model, colour, fuel and engine details on Vahan match the vehicle in front of them.
Checks before buying a used car
Compare the Vahan record with the RC, the chassis number stamped on the vehicle and the insurance policy. Look for hypothecation, which means a loan is still recorded, and for pending challans before you pay.
When the check fails
If Vahan shows a different model or “record not found”, do not buy until the seller explains it.
How to get vehicle details by number plate Gujarat
To get vehicle details by number plate Gujarat, read the full number from the plate and enter it on Vahan or mParivahan. You will see the registering office, vehicle class and certificate validity, but only a masked owner name: RTO Gujarat vehicle information is public only in summary form because of privacy rules.
Reading a dirty or damaged plate
If the plate is unclear, check the windscreen sticker, the RC or the insurance papers for the number. HSRP plates also carry a laser code, but that serial cannot be searched on Vahan by the public.
How to see Gujarat RTO vehicle registration details
To see Gujarat RTO vehicle registration details for your own vehicle, log in on Vahan with the registered mobile number or open the RC in DigiLocker. You then see full details and can download or print the RC.
If your mobile number is wrong
If the RC carries an old mobile number, update it through Vahan’s mobile number update service with Aadhaar authentication. Some cases still need a visit to your Ahmedabad office with the original RC.
Can you do a Gujarat RTO vehicle registration owner search?
A full Gujarat RTO vehicle registration owner search is not open to the public. You can see a masked name, and the registered owner can see everything after logging in. Anyone else who needs owner details must go through the police or a court.
Lawful reasons to trace an owner
Accident claims, abandoned vehicles and stolen vehicle cases are handled by the police, who request records from the RTO.
Beware of paid owner search sites
Sites that sell owner phone numbers are not authorised. Paying them may break privacy law and the data is often wrong.
GJ transport vehicle registration details on Vahan
GJ transport vehicle registration details for commercial vehicles appear on Vahan with extra fields such as permit type, permit validity, gross vehicle weight and fitness expiry. Transporters check these before hiring a truck or taxi registered in Gujarat.
Permits for goods and passenger vehicles
Commercial vehicles need a permit for the area they operate in, from a local permit to a national permit for goods.
Fitness for commercial vehicles
Commercial vehicles need a fitness certificate renewed at set intervals. Ahmedabad owners book the test online and take the vehicle to the inspection centre on the booked day.
What does Gujarat auto mean on an RTO search?
“Gujarat auto” is ambiguous. It may refer to auto-rickshaw registration and permits in Gujarat, to private dealers called “Gujarat Auto”, or to auto loans. We only cover the RTO side: auto-rickshaws are registered as three-wheeled transport vehicles and need a permit.
Auto-rickshaw registration in Ahmedabad
Autos in Ahmedabad carry yellow commercial plates with GJ 01, GJ 27 or GJ 38. The driver needs a licence valid for the transport category and the vehicle must have a valid permit and fitness certificate.
Private Gujarat Auto businesses
Dealers, garages or finance firms named “Gujarat Auto” have no link with the RTO, and we do not review them.
Where is RTO Vadodara?
RTO Vadodara issues GJ 06 numbers and covers the whole of Vadodara district according to the code list we used. It is a separate office under the same Commissionerate, so Vadodara residents do not use the Ahmedabad offices for their vehicle work.

Vadodara’s office details
We have a dedicated page for the Vadodara office and its code. Read our guide to GJ 06 which city for the code, area and services.
GJ 29 and Vadodara
Some directories link GJ 29 with a second Vadodara office at Darjipura. The list we checked marks GJ 29 as reserved, so search the full number on Vahan if you see it on a plate.
Where is RTO Surat?
RTO Surat issues GJ 05 numbers for Surat City and the Olpad, Chorasi, Kamrej and Palsana talukas. Eastern Surat talukas, including Bardoli, Mahuva and Mandvi, use the separate GJ 19 Bardoli office instead.
Surat’s two offices
Surat works like Ahmedabad in having more than one code. City residents go to the GJ 05 office, while those in the eastern talukas go to Bardoli.
Challans in Surat
Surat’s city police also run a camera e-challan system. For how to check and pay those, see our page on e challan Surat.
Can you use Surat RTO online services?
Yes. Surat RTO online services are the same Vahan and Sarathi services used in Ahmedabad. You can apply for a learner licence, pay road tax, transfer ownership or update the address online, then visit the Surat office only if the service needs it.
Learner licence tests
Sarathi shows which learner licence test options your chosen Gujarat office offers when you apply, so check there rather than relying on hearsay. The permanent licence driving test always needs a visit to the test track.
Moving between Surat and Ahmedabad
If you move from Surat to Ahmedabad, you keep your GJ 05 number. Update the address on the RC and licence online, choosing the new Ahmedabad office.
What is the GJ 11 RTO?
The GJ 11 RTO is the Junagadh office, so the Junagadh GJ code is GJ 11, covering the whole of Junagadh district. It is often confused with Bhuj because some older lists printed the codes in the wrong order; Bhuj is GJ 12.
Junagadh’s neighbours
Nearby codes include GJ 25 Porbandar, GJ 32 Veraval (Gir Somnath) and GJ 14 Amreli. Gir Somnath was carved out of Junagadh, which is why older vehicles from Veraval may still carry GJ 11.
Is there an RTO Gandhinagar website?
There is no separate RTO Gandhinagar website, just as there is no separate Surat RTO website. The Gandhinagar office (GJ 18) is listed on the Commissionerate’s site, which is itself based in Gandhinagar, and its services run on Vahan and Sarathi like every other Gujarat office.
Gandhinagar office and the Commissionerate
The Gandhinagar RTO and the state Commissionerate are separate offices. The RTO handles local vehicles and licences; the Commissionerate supervises all offices and is not a place for routine applications.
GSRTC buses on GJ 18
Gandhinagar registers all GSRTC buses, according to the code list we used, so GJ 18 buses run all over Gujarat, including Ahmedabad.
Which services does the Ahmedabad RTO handle?
The Ahmedabad offices handle registration, licensing, permits, tax and fitness for their talukas. Almost every service starts online, and the office visit is limited to steps that need a person, a vehicle or an original document.
Vehicle services
These include new registration for non-dealer cases, ownership transfer, hypothecation addition or removal, duplicate RC, address change, NOC for another state, re-registration of outside vehicles and fitness tests for commercial vehicles.
Licence services
Learner licence, permanent licence tests, renewals, duplicates, address changes and international driving permits are handled through Sarathi. To start the process at home, see our page on how to apply for a driving licence online in Gujarat.
| Service | Online on portal | Office visit usually needed |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership transfer | Application and payment on Vahan | Sometimes, for verification |
| Address change on RC | Application on Vahan | Rarely |
| Learner licence | Application and test on Sarathi | Not for online test cases |
| Permanent driving licence | Application and slot on Sarathi | Yes, for the driving test |
| Commercial vehicle fitness | Booking on Vahan | Yes, vehicle inspection |
Which documents should you carry to an Ahmedabad RTO?
Carry the application receipt, the originals of every document you uploaded and one set of self-attested copies. For vehicle services that usually means the RC, insurance and PUC; for licence services, your learner licence, ID and address proof.

ID and address proof
Aadhaar is the most common proof, and it also allows faceless services. Passports, voter IDs and utility bills are also accepted for address in many cases; check the list shown during your application.
Forms and signatures
Transfer cases need forms signed by both buyer and seller.
How do you transfer a vehicle within Ahmedabad?
Ownership transfer is applied for on Vahan by the buyer and seller, with forms, insurance and PUC. If both live in Ahmedabad, the office that holds the record handles it; a move between GJ 01 and GJ 27 areas does not change the number.
Buying from another district
If you buy a vehicle registered in Rajkot and live in Ahmedabad, the transfer may involve both offices. The vehicle keeps its GJ 03 number.
Pending challans block transfers
Unpaid challans can block a transfer on Vahan. Check them first on the e-challan portal and clear them before you apply.
Can you keep a GJ 01 number after moving to Vastral?
Yes. A move inside Gujarat does not change the registration number. If you move from Sabarmati to Vastral, you keep GJ 01 on the plate and update the address on the RC through Vahan, choosing the new office for any later service.
Why the number stays
Registration numbers are tied to the vehicle, not to the owner’s address.

Which is the main RTO in Ahmedabad?
The oldest and best-known office is GJ 01 at Subhash Bridge, Sabarmati. It is not a head office for the others, though; GJ 27 Vastral and GJ 38 Bavla each register vehicles for their own talukas.
Is Vastral RTO GJ 01 or GJ 27?
Vastral is GJ 27, the Ahmedabad East office. Vehicles registered there carry GJ 27 on the plate, while GJ 01 belongs to the Subhash Bridge office on the western side.
GJ 01 is which city?
GJ 01 is Ahmedabad, specifically the western-bank talukas of Vejalpur, Sabarmati and Ghatlodiya plus part of Daskroi.
Which district is GJ 27?
GJ 27 is in Ahmedabad district. It is the second urban office of the same district, not a separate district.
What is GJ 38?
GJ 38 is the Bavla office for rural Ahmedabad, covering Bavla, Sanand, Viramgam, Detroj-Rampura, Mandal, Dholka, Dhandhuka and Dholera.
What is the Ahmedabad RTO phone number?
Directories print several different numbers for the Ahmedabad offices, and we could not confirm any of them on an official page. Check the office list on the COT Gujarat site before you call.
What is the official RTO Gujarat website?
The state Commissionerate of Transport publishes its information at cot.gujarat.gov.in. The applications themselves run on parivahan.gov.in through Vahan and Sarathi.
Can I change my RTO from GJ 01 to GJ 27 after moving?
No new number is issued for a move inside Gujarat. You update the address on the RC through Vahan, and the original GJ 01 number stays on the vehicle.
What is GJ 11?
GJ 11 is Junagadh. It is often confused with Bhuj, which is GJ 12.
Can I find the owner of a Gujarat vehicle by number?
Public searches on Vahan or mParivahan show only a masked owner name with model, RTO and validity dates. Full owner details are released only to the owner, the police or the courts.
Does Ahmedabad RTO issue e-challans?
Most Ahmedabad e-challans come from the city traffic police camera system, not the RTO. You check and pay them online on the e-challan portal.
How many RTO codes does Gujarat have?
The list we used runs from GJ 01 to GJ 40, with GJ 28 and GJ 29 shown as not allocated, so 38 codes are in active use.
