UK 18 district name, every Uttarakhand plate code and Uttarakhand road tax explained

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 23 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

In most cases, Uttarakhand road tax is a one-time charge on most private vehicles, worked out by the Vahan portal when you register; one insurer guide lists 8% to 10% of a new car's cost, while others print 6% and 8%. On the plate, UK 18 is Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district. The state's codes run from UK 01 Almora to UK 20 Ranikhet.

Key takeaways

  • UK 18 is Kashipur and UK 06 is Rudrapur; both offices sit in Udham Singh Nagar district.
  • UK 04 is Haldwani, UK 19 Ramnagar and UK 14 Rishikesh, so one district can hold two or three codes.
  • Dehradun district uses UK 07, UK 14 and UK 16 (Dehradun, Rishikesh and Vikasnagar).
  • Plates starting UA are older Uttaranchal registrations from 2000 to 2007 and remain valid.
  • Guides disagree on Uttarakhand road tax slabs; the amount Vahan calculates for your vehicle is the one that counts.
  • Tax is paid online through Vahan citizen services by choosing Uttarakhand and your office.

What is the UK 18 district name?

The UK 18 district name is Udham Singh Nagar, and the office behind the code is in Kashipur. Kashipur is a city in the western part of the district, in the Terai plains of the Kumaon division. Any vehicle whose number begins UK 18 was first registered there, and paid its Uttarakhand road tax through that office.

Uttarakhand road tax and UK code stat card with 13 districts and twenty office codes
Twenty office numbers serve thirteen districts; the tax band is a guide figure, not a bill.

Kashipur in a few figures

The 2011 census counted 121,623 people in Kashipur city and 283,136 in the wider Kashipur tehsil, which also takes in Mahua Kheraganj and Kachnal Gosain. The town sits about 218 metres above sea level, far below the hill districts.

Why the district name and town differ

Udham Singh Nagar’s headquarters is Rudrapur, not Kashipur. So the district name and the office town are not the same, which is why searches for the UK 18 district name and the UK 18 city return two different answers. Both are correct.

Which office issues the UK 18 RTO code?

The UK 18 RTO code is issued by the transport office at Kashipur. CarInfo lists the registered office as Kashipur, Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, PIN 244713. We could not find a published street address, phone number or office hours, so confirm them before travelling.

Regional or assistant regional office

Uttarakhand runs both regional and assistant regional transport offices. The sources we checked do not say which grade the Kashipur office holds, so we call it the Kashipur transport office rather than guess its rank.

Where to find the current address

The state transport department site, transport.uk.gov.in, publishes office contacts. The office name also appears on any Vahan receipt or RC from Kashipur, which is the simplest proof of where a record sits.

Which towns get a UK 18 number plate?

A UK 18 number plate goes to vehicles registered by owners whose address falls under the Kashipur office. Kashipur itself is the core of that area. The official boundary list is not published in our sources, so we do not claim which tehsils are included.

Nearby towns on the map

Kashipur’s neighbours are Jaspur to the west and Bajpur and Rudrapur to the east. Ramnagar and Jim Corbett National Park lie north, and Moradabad and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh lie south. Which code a town gets depends on the office jurisdiction, not just distance.

Address decides, not the dealer

A car bought at a Rudrapur showroom by a Kashipur resident will normally be registered at the office for the owner’s address. The dealer’s location does not change that, although many dealers file papers for buyers.

What can you do at the Kashipur UK 18 office?

At the Kashipur office you can expect the usual registration services: new registration, ownership transfer, address change, hypothecation entries, duplicate RC and tax collection. Licence services usually run from the same offices. Many of these start online on Parivahan before a visit.

Services that need a visit

Physical inspection of a vehicle, such as checking chassis and engine numbers, still needs a visit to the office. So do some fitness checks for transport vehicles and any task where the portal asks for original papers.

Services you can finish online

Tax payment, application status, receipts and many forms can be handled on Vahan without going in. Book any appointment slot the portal offers rather than walking in, since slots manage the queue.

Which neighbouring codes surround UK 18?

The codes closest to UK 18 are UK 06 Rudrapur in the same district, UK 04 Haldwani and UK 19 Ramnagar in Nainital district. Across the state border, Moradabad, Rampur and Bijnor districts carry Uttar Pradesh codes, so you will see many UP plates in Kashipur traffic.

Kumaon neighbours

Going north and east you meet UK 19 Ramnagar, UK 04 Haldwani, UK 03 Champawat and UK 20 Ranikhet. All of them are Kumaon offices, and plates from the hills are common in Kashipur’s markets.

The Uttar Pradesh side

Udham Singh Nagar borders five UP districts: Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad, Pilibhit and Bijnor. Plates from those districts start with UP, not UK. Our UP 16 district name guide decodes many of them.

How do the UK 06 RTO and Kashipur split one district?

The UK 06 RTO at Rudrapur and the Kashipur office share Udham Singh Nagar district. Rudrapur is the headquarters, while Kashipur serves the western side. The district has nine tehsils, so two offices make sense for a busy plains district with heavy traffic and industry.

Comparison of the UK 06 Rudrapur and UK 18 Kashipur codes inside Udham Singh Nagar
Which number a buyer gets depends on the address on the papers.

The nine tehsils

Udham Singh Nagar’s tehsils are Jaspur, Kashipur, Bajpur, Gadarpur, Rudrapur, Kichha, Sitarganj, Nanakmatta and Khatima. The department decides which tehsil reports to which office, and that split can change by notification.

Distance between the offices

Kashipur is about 56 km from Rudrapur and about 72 km from Haldwani. The NH 309 highway runs between Kashipur and Rudrapur, and onward north to Ramnagar.

What is the UK06 district name?

The UK06 district name is Udham Singh Nagar, and the office is at Rudrapur, the district headquarters. Udham Singh Nagar was created on 29 September 1995 out of Nainital district, five years before Uttarakhand itself became a state.

Size of the district

The district covers 2,542 square km and had 1,648,902 people in 2011. It borders Nainital to the north, Champawat to the north-east and Nepal to the east.

Main towns

Besides Rudrapur and Kashipur, the main towns include Khatima, Kichha, Sitarganj, Bajpur, Jaspur, Nanakmatta and Pantnagar. Pantnagar, about 5 km from Rudrapur, is home to G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology.

UK 06 RTO code: what does Rudrapur handle?

The UK 06 RTO code belongs to the Rudrapur office, which handles registrations for the parts of Udham Singh Nagar not served by Kashipur. Being at the headquarters, it is the natural place for district-level transport matters and enforcement coordination.

Same rules, different number

UK 06 and UK 18 follow the same state rules and tax rates. The only practical difference for an owner is the office that holds the record and where any visit takes place.

Moving within the district

If you move from Kashipur to Rudrapur, you keep your UK 18 number. You update the address on the RC; there is no need to change the plate.

What is the UK04 district name?

The UK04 district name is Nainital, but the office is at Haldwani. Haldwani is the district’s largest town and its gateway in the foothills, while Nainital town is the hill resort and headquarters further up the road.

Parts of a UK 18 number plate explained using a Kashipur registration example
Only the first two blocks of the plate point to a place.

Two codes in Nainital district

Nainital district has UK 04 Haldwani and UK 19 Ramnagar. A plate with either code points to the same district but different offices.

Haldwani and Kathgodam

Kathgodam, the railhead next to Haldwani, sits in the same area. So travellers often meet UK 04 taxis at the station on the way up to Nainital and the lakes.

UK 04 which city: Haldwani or Nainital?

For UK 04, the city is Haldwani. Many people answer “Nainital” because that is the district name, and both answers point to the same district. But the registering office named in the code list is Haldwani, not Nainital town.

Why the plains town got the office

Haldwani is the commercial hub of the district, with most vehicle dealers and the largest population. Placing the office there suits the bulk of buyers, though the source does not explain the original choice.

How to settle the doubt

Search any UK 04 plate on Vahan. The result names the registering office, which settles the question for that particular vehicle.

Where is the UK 04 RTO and what does it cover?

The UK 04 RTO is in Haldwani and covers the parts of Nainital district not served by Ramnagar. That includes Haldwani town, the hill areas around Nainital and the lake towns. We did not find a verified street address, so check the state transport site.

Typical work at Haldwani

As a large office, Haldwani handles new registrations, transfers, permits and licence tests. Hill-route taxis and buses add a lot of permit and fitness work.

Trips from the hills

Owners in Nainital’s hill blocks often combine an office visit with other errands in Haldwani. Booking a Vahan appointment first saves a wasted trip down the hill.

Is the UK04 RTO code used only in Haldwani?

The UK04 RTO code is issued by the Haldwani office, but the vehicles carrying it are used across the state and beyond. A UK 04 plate only tells you where the car was first registered, not where it is driven today or where its owner now lives.

Owners who move away

An owner who moves from Haldwani to Dehradun keeps UK 04 on the plate. Within the state, only the address on the RC needs updating.

Moving out of Uttarakhand

If the owner moves to another state for more than 12 months, the vehicle must be re-registered there. A no objection certificate from the UK office starts that process.

Where is the UK 19 RTO?

The UK 19 RTO is at Ramnagar in Nainital district. Ramnagar is the town at the edge of Jim Corbett National Park, about halfway between Kashipur and the Kumaon hills. Safari jeeps and tourist taxis there commonly carry UK 19 plates.

Ramnagar and Kashipur

NH 309 links Ramnagar with Kashipur. So the two codes, UK 19 and UK 18, are common on the same road even though they belong to different districts.

Not to be confused with UK 09

UK 19 is Ramnagar, while UK 09 is Tehri in Garhwal. A missing digit in a search is a common cause of wrong results.

What is the UK01 district name?

The UK01 district name is Almora, and the office is in Almora town. Almora is one of the old Kumaon hill towns, and UK 01 is the first number on the state list. Almora district also has a second code, UK 20 for Ranikhet.

Almora and Ranikhet

UK 20 Ranikhet serves the cantonment town and nearby areas, while UK 01 covers the rest of Almora district from the town office.

Number order is not ranking

UK 01 being first does not make Almora the main office. The early Kumaon numbers run in alphabetical order of district: Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat, then Nainital.

What is the UK 05 district name?

The UK 05 district name is Pithoragarh, the border district in the far east of Kumaon next to Nepal and Tibet. The office is in Pithoragarh town. It is the only code listed for the district, which stretches up to high Himalayan valleys.

Hill-district driving

Pithoragarh vehicles often cover long mountain routes. Buyers there usually register at the town office once and keep UK 05 wherever they later drive.

Bageshwar and Champawat

Its neighbours carry UK 02 Bageshwar and UK 03 Champawat. Together with UK 01 they make up the hill block of early Kumaon codes.

UK 14 which city: is it Rishikesh?

Yes. For UK 14, the city is Rishikesh, which lies in Dehradun district. Rishikesh is the riverside town on the Ganga, popular with pilgrims and rafting groups, so the code is common on taxis and tempo travellers in the Char Dham season.

Rishikesh and Haridwar

Rishikesh is close to Haridwar, but they are in different districts. Haridwar town is UK 08 and Roorkee UK 17, both in Haridwar district.

Dehradun district’s three codes

UK 14 is one of three codes in Dehradun district, alongside UK 07 Dehradun and UK 16 Vikasnagar.

What does the UK 14 RTO handle?

The UK 14 RTO at Rishikesh handles registrations, transfers and related work for the owners under its area. Because Rishikesh is the start of the main pilgrim routes into Garhwal, commercial permits and fitness work for tourist vehicles form a notable share of its business.

Season-linked rush

During the yatra months, offices on the pilgrim route see more permit and fitness requests. Plan non-urgent visits outside the peak season when you can.

Online first

Tax payment and many applications can start on Vahan. The office then only needs you for checks that require the vehicle or original papers.

Which office uses the UK 17 RTO code?

The UK 17 RTO code is used by the Roorkee office in Haridwar district. Roorkee is the university and cantonment town on the plains, close to the UP border, and is home to IIT Roorkee. Haridwar town itself uses UK 08.

Two codes in Haridwar district

Haridwar district has UK 08 Haridwar and UK 17 Roorkee. The district headquarters is listed at Roshnabad, near Haridwar town.

Border traffic

Roorkee sits on the main road from western UP. So expect to see many UP plates alongside UK 17 ones there.

Which town is behind the UK 15 RTO code?

The UK 15 RTO code belongs to Kotdwar, a foothill town in Pauri Garhwal district on the plains edge near the UP border. Pauri town, the district headquarters up in the hills, has its own code, UK 12.

Pauri Garhwal’s two offices

Pauri Garhwal therefore has UK 12 Pauri and UK 15 Kotdwar. The split separates the hill headquarters from the plains gateway town.

A proposed district

Kotdwar was among the towns named in a 2011 plan for new districts. None of those districts was formally notified, so Kotdwar remains in Pauri Garhwal.

What is the Dehradun number plate code?

The main Dehradun number plate code is UK 07, issued by the office in Dehradun city. Two more codes cover the rest of Dehradun district: UK 14 Rishikesh and UK 16 Vikasnagar. For the Dehradun office itself, see our RTO Dehradun guide.

Table of Kumaon UK RTO number codes from Almora UK 01 to Ranikhet UK 20
Kumaon's offices, including both Udham Singh Nagar numbers.

The capital’s office

Dehradun is the state capital, so UK 07 is likely the busiest Uttarakhand code, though we found no official registration count per office.

Vikasnagar

UK 16 covers Vikasnagar in the western part of the district, towards the Yamuna and the Himachal border.

Dehradun number plate: three codes in one district

A Dehradun number plate can start UK 07, UK 14 or UK 16. All three are Dehradun district, but each points to a different office. So “Dehradun plate” means any of the three, while “Dehradun city plate” usually means UK 07.

Old Dehradun plates

Vehicles first registered between 2000 and 2007 may still carry UA instead of UK. They are Dehradun vehicles too, simply from the Uttaranchal years.

Checking which office

The Vahan record names the office. That matters when a task, such as an address change, has to go through the office that holds the file.

UK registration: which state is it?

A UK registration belongs to Uttarakhand. UK is the two-letter code the state has used for new vehicles since its renaming from Uttaranchal, when the old UA code ended on 31 October 2007. Every Uttarakhand office code follows the letters UK.

Where UK sits among state codes

UK appears alongside other two-letter codes such as UP, HP and HR. Our list of state codes gives every prefix used in India.

Kumaon and Garhwal

The state’s 13 districts are split between two divisions: six in Kumaon and seven in Garhwal. Codes from both divisions use the same UK letters.

UK number plate India: not the United Kingdom

A UK number plate in India is an Uttarakhand registration, not a British one. People abroad, and some apps, confuse the two. Indian plates start with the two state letters followed by the office digits, which is a completely different layout from British plates.

How to tell them apart

An Indian UK plate reads like UK 18 AB 1234: state, office, series, number. If you see a plate with that shape on an Indian road, it is from Uttarakhand.

Search engines and apps

When you search a UK number, add “Uttarakhand” or use Vahan directly. That avoids results meant for British vehicle checks.

How do you read an Uttarakhand number plate?

An Uttarakhand number plate has four parts. UK is the state, the next two digits are the office, then come up to three series letters, and finally a number from 1 to 9999. Only the first two parts carry a place meaning.

Garhwal Uttarakhand vehicle codes table listing Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kotdwar and Roorkee offices
Garhwal holds UK 07 to UK 17 without a gap.

The series letters

Series letters such as AB or C run in order as each office fills its numbers. They skip I and O to avoid confusion with 1 and 0, and they do not mark a town or tehsil.

The running number

The last block runs from 1 to 9999, padded with leading zeros on the plate. Special numbers such as 0001 are allotted under the fancy number rules.

Uttarakhand number plate colours and series letters

The colour of an Uttarakhand number plate tells you how the vehicle is used. Private vehicles have black letters on white, transport vehicles black on yellow, rental vehicles yellow on black, and electric vehicles white on green. These rules are national, so they match other states.

Taxis on hill routes

Most tourist taxis in Uttarakhand carry yellow plates. A white-plate car carrying paying passengers is a private vehicle used commercially, which is not allowed.

Electric vehicles

Green plates mark battery electric vehicles. Their codes still follow the same UK office numbers, such as UK 18 or UK 07.

The pattern in the numbers

UK 01 to UK 13 give one code to each of the 13 districts, with the six Kumaon districts first and the Garhwal districts after them. UK 14 to UK 20 were added for second offices in busy towns such as Rishikesh, Roorkee and Kashipur.

Chamoli’s office name

Chamoli district’s code UK 11 is listed under Gopeshwar, the district headquarters. Searches for “Chamoli code” and “Gopeshwar code” mean the same office.

Proposed districts and codes

A 2016 proposal named Kashipur, Rishikesh, Roorkee, Ramnagar and Sitarganj-Khatima as possible new districts. None was notified, so the district column above still holds.

Why this matters for UK 18

If Kashipur ever became a district, the UK 18 district name could change from Udham Singh Nagar to Kashipur, while the code itself would likely stay. That remains hypothetical.

How many Uttarakhand RTO number codes are there?

There are 20 Uttarakhand RTO number codes in the list we checked, UK 01 to UK 20, for 13 districts. That makes Uttarakhand one of the smaller code sets in India, which suits a state with large hill areas and fewer vehicles than its plains neighbours.

Counting offices, not plates

Twenty codes means twenty registering offices. A code does not cap the number of vehicles; each office simply moves to new series letters as it fills each block.

Kumaon versus Garhwal

Kumaon’s six districts use nine codes, and Garhwal’s seven districts use eleven. Dehradun district alone holds three.

What was the UA RTO code system?

The UA RTO codes were Uttarakhand’s first plates. The state was formed as Uttaranchal in November 2000, and vehicles registered from 22 November 2000 used UA. After the renaming to Uttarakhand, UA ended on 31 October 2007 and new registrations moved to UK.

Timeline of the UA RTO code changing to UK for Uttarakhand vehicles in 2007
A plate starting UA is old, not foreign or invalid.

Old UA plates are still valid

Former codes stay valid for vehicles already registered. A car with a UA plate does not need a new number, and no re-registration is required just because of the code change.

Before 2000

Before the state existed, these districts were part of Uttar Pradesh and used UP codes. Those old UP numbers allotted to the hill districts are now listed as defunct.

Which office had the UA 07 RTO code?

The UA 07 RTO code was an Uttaranchal-era code. It is widely assumed that the UA office numbers carried over unchanged to UK, which would make UA 07 the Dehradun office, but we could not find a published UA office list to confirm this.

How to check a UA 07 vehicle

Search the full UA number on Vahan. The result names the registering office today, which answers the question for that vehicle without relying on the assumption.

Selling an old UA vehicle

A UA vehicle is transferred like any other. The new owner keeps the UA number, and the transfer is handled by the office that now holds the record.

How does an Uttarakhand RTO vehicle information search work?

An Uttarakhand RTO vehicle information search uses the national Vahan database, since Uttarakhand registers vehicles on Vahan like other states. You enter the full registration number, solve a captcha or confirm an OTP, and the portal shows the registration office and key details.

Steps for a quick check

Open the vehicle details search on Parivahan or the mParivahan app, type a number such as UK18AB1234 without spaces, verify, and read the result.

Use the two-digit form

Always enter the office code as two digits. UK7 instead of UK07 is a common reason a search returns nothing.

RTO vehicle information UK: what a search shows

RTO vehicle information UK searches show the registering office, vehicle class, fuel type, model and validity dates for insurance, fitness and tax where recorded. The owner’s name is partly masked in public searches. For a full guide, see our page on RTO vehicle information.

What it does not show

Public searches do not show the owner’s full name, phone number or address. Those records go only to the owner or authorised agencies.

Spotting problems before buying

When buying a used UK vehicle, check that the office, model and fuel in the record match the papers and the vehicle in front of you.

What is Uttarakhand road tax?

Uttarakhand road tax is the motor vehicle tax the state charges to register and use a vehicle on its roads. For most private cars and two-wheelers it is a one-time payment at registration, worked out as a share of the vehicle’s cost, while transport vehicles generally pay on a periodic basis.

Five steps for Uttarakhand road tax online payment on the Vahan citizen services portal
The portal calculates the figure; you only confirm and pay.

Who collects it

The state transport department sets the rates, and the registering office, such as UK 18 Kashipur, collects them through Vahan when the vehicle is registered.

How it differs from tolls

Road tax is a state charge for registering a vehicle. Tolls are separate fees paid on specific highways and bridges, usually through FASTag.

How much is Uttarakhand road tax on a new car?

Uttarakhand road tax on a new private car is reported by Bajaj Finserv as 8% up to Rs 5 lakh, 9% from Rs 5 to 10 lakh and 10% above Rs 10 lakh. Other guides print different slabs, and we could not reach the state’s own schedule, so confirm before you budget.

The same guide gives an example: a car costing Rs 9 lakh at 9% means Rs 81,000 in road tax. Your dealer’s on-road quote should show a similar line.

Why figures differ

Acko and CarInfo print a different table, 6% up to Rs 10 lakh and 8% above. We report both because neither matches a state notification we could open. Our road tax calculator guide compares states.

Uttarakhand road tax on bikes and electric vehicles

Uttarakhand road tax on two-wheelers is also charged as a one-time share of the cost. Acko and CarInfo list 6% and 8% bands, while the electric vehicle policy is reported to exempt the first 10,000 EV buyers from motor tax for five years.

The exemption was capped by buyer numbers, so it may already be used up. Ask the dealer or office before counting on it. Our EV subsidy page covers other state schemes.

Bikes on the hill routes

For two-wheelers the band applies to the ex-showroom price. The tax is paid once at registration and covers the vehicle’s life in the state.

How do you pay Uttarakhand road tax online?

To pay Uttarakhand road tax online, open Vahan citizen services, choose Uttarakhand and your registering office, enter the vehicle number and chassis digits, check the amount and pay. The portal calculates the tax, so you do not enter the amount yourself.

  1. Open Vahan citizen services. Go to the vehicle related services section on the Parivahan portal.
  2. Choose Uttarakhand and the office. Select the state, then the office that holds your record, such as UK 18 Kashipur.
  3. Enter the vehicle details. Type the registration number without spaces and the last digits of the chassis number.
  4. Check the amount. Read the tax period and amount the portal works out before you continue.
  5. Pay and keep the receipt. Pay by card, net banking or UPI, then download and save the receipt.

New vehicles from a dealer

For a new vehicle, the dealer usually pays the tax as part of the registration file, and the amount appears on the on-road price breakup.

Keep the receipt handy

Save the tax receipt as a PDF and keep a printed copy in the vehicle. It helps at check posts and during later transfers.

Online road tax payment Uttarakhand: fixing failed payments

Most online road tax payment Uttarakhand problems are pending transactions, a vehicle not found, or an unlinked mobile number. A pending payment may take one to two hours to settle. Do not pay twice; use the Check Pending Transaction option under the status menu first.

Most failed payments clear without paying twice.

Vehicle not found

Retype the number without spaces or dashes, and make sure the office selected matches the code, such as Kashipur for UK 18.

Mobile number not linked

If the OTP goes to an old number, update the mobile number on the RC record first, then return to the tax payment.

Do vehicles from other states pay Uttarakhand road tax?

Vehicles from other states generally do not pay Uttarakhand road tax for a short visit. But if a vehicle is kept in Uttarakhand for more than 12 months, the Motor Vehicles Act requires a new registration mark there, which usually means paying the state’s tax.

Moving to Kashipur from UP

A family moving from Moradabad to Kashipur would get a no objection certificate from the UP office, then register at the Uttarakhand office and pay the tax due.

Commercial vehicles at the border

Transport vehicles entering the state may face border or permit tax. Our check post tax guide explains how that works.

When is Uttarakhand road tax due?

For private vehicles, Uttarakhand road tax is due when the vehicle is registered, before the permanent number is issued. Transport vehicles pay by the period set in their tax schedule. Late or unpaid tax can lead to penalties, seizure and a block on RC services.

What happens if you fall behind

Guides list penalties on top of the tax, possible seizure of the vehicle and refusal of services such as transfer or RC renewal until dues are cleared. Check the exact penalty with the office.

After the 15-year period

Private vehicle tax usually covers 15 years. After that, renewing the registration may bring a further tax payment, so ask the office what applies.
