UP 14 district name, UP 16 RTO code and every other UP code
The UP 14 district name is Ghaziabad, a district in Meerut division on Delhi's eastern border. Its neighbour UP 16 is the Noida office for Gautam Buddha Nagar district. Uttar Pradesh codes run from UP 11 (Saharanpur) to UP 96 (Chitrakoot). The two digits after UP name the registering office, not the owner's current home.
Key takeaways
- UP 14 is Ghaziabad and UP 16 is Noida, which serves Gautam Buddha Nagar district.
- The published UP RTO code list runs from UP 11 to UP 96; UP 1 to UP 10 went to districts now in Uttarakhand.
- Lucknow uses UP 32, Varanasi UP 65, Prayagraj UP 70, Agra UP 80 and Mathura UP 85.
- Some numbers, such as 18, 28 and 39, are not assigned in the main published table.
- Moradabad and Rampur add letters such as G and T for government and commercial vehicles.
- Confirm any code on Vahan or the UP Transport Department site, because private lists vary.

What is the UP 14 district name?
The UP 14 district name is Ghaziabad. The code belongs to the registering office for Ghaziabad district, which sits in Meerut division and forms a core part of the National Capital Region. Any car, bike or truck registered there carries UP 14 straight after the state letters on its plate.

Ghaziabad in one line
Ghaziabad city is the district headquarters. The district lies on Delhi’s eastern edge and has grown into a large commuter suburb for people who work in the capital, which is why UP 14 plates are common on Delhi roads every day.
What UP 14 does not tell you
The code shows the office that first entered the vehicle into the registration database. It does not prove that the driver lives in Ghaziabad today, and it says nothing about who owns the vehicle now. For that, an official record search is needed.
Which areas does the UP 14 RTO code cover?
The UP 14 RTO code covers Ghaziabad district as a whole. Wikipedia’s RTO district list gives the office location as Ghaziabad and the jurisdiction as Ghaziabad district. Hapur, which used to be part of the same area, now has its own code, UP 37.
Ghaziabad and Hapur today
Hapur district, once called Panchsheel Nagar, is the smallest district in Uttar Pradesh. Vehicles registered there after it got its own office carry UP 37 rather than UP 14, so two similar-looking plates may come from neighbouring towns.
Older plates from the same belt
A vehicle bought years ago in a town that later moved to a new district keeps its original number. Re-registration is not needed just because district lines were redrawn, so you can still see older UP 14 plates on vehicles kept in the Hapur area.
How does the UP 14 code look on a number plate?
On a plate the UP 14 code sits in the first block, for example UP 14 AB 1234. “UP” is the state, “14” is the Ghaziabad office, “AB” is the running letter series, and “1234” is the number inside that series. New plates are high-security plates with a chromium hologram.

Private and commercial colours
A white plate with black characters means a private vehicle. A yellow plate with black characters marks a commercial vehicle such as a taxi or goods carrier. Battery electric vehicles show the number on a green plate, under a 2018 central notification.
Where the series letters come from
Each office moves through letter series in order as numbers run out. A newer UP 14 vehicle therefore tends to have a later series than an older one, but you should not use the letters alone to date a vehicle; the RC is the record that counts.
What is the UP 16 RTO code used for?
The UP 16 RTO code is used by the Noida registering office for Gautam Buddha Nagar district. That district covers Noida, Greater Noida, Dadri, Jewar, YEIDA City and Dankaur, and it is divided into three tehsils: Noida, Dadri and Jewar. Greater Noida is the district headquarters.

One office name, a wider district
Lists often write “UP 16 Noida”, but the jurisdiction is the full district. A car registered by a buyer in Greater Noida or Jewar can therefore carry UP 16 too, even though the plate seems to name only the Noida office.
Noida is not Ghaziabad
People often mix up the two Delhi-border codes. Noida is UP 16 under Gautam Buddha Nagar; Ghaziabad is UP 14 under its own district. The two districts are neighbours, but they keep separate registering offices and separate district administrations.
Does Greater Noida also use the UP 16 RTO code?
Yes, most published lists treat Greater Noida as part of the UP 16 jurisdiction because it lies in Gautam Buddha Nagar district. A few insurer and comparison sites also name UP 18 for Greater Noida, but the main published table does not list UP 18, so treat that claim as unconfirmed.
How to settle a UP 18 question
If you see a plate starting UP 18, search the complete number in a Vahan-based vehicle search. The result names the registering authority in official words, which settles the question better than any blog list, including this one.
Why lists disagree
Codes are assigned by the state transport department through notifications that are not always easy to find online. We log any code we cannot confirm and recheck it during scheduled reviews.
What is the UP 85 district name?
The UP 85 district name is Mathura. The district lies along the river Yamuna in Agra division and covers about 3,340 sq km. Its headquarters is Mathura city, and it includes pilgrimage towns such as Vrindavan and the areas of Govardhan, Chhata and Mant.
Tehsils served by UP 85
Mathura district has five tehsils, among them Mathura, Govardhan, Chhata and Mant. A vehicle registered by an owner living in any of them usually carries UP 85, because the district has one main code in the published list.
Mathura’s neighbours on the list
Agra, the division headquarters, uses UP 80. Hathras, to the east, uses UP 86, and Aligarh to the north-east uses UP 81. Seeing these codes together on the Yamuna Expressway or in the Braj region is normal.
More on the Mathura office
For office-level detail, such as the services and visits to the Mathura office, see our guide to the UP 85 RTO. This page keeps to what the code means and where it fits in the state list.
What is the UP 82 district name?
The UP 82 district name is Etah. The office location and jurisdiction are both given as Etah in the published list. Etah district belongs to Aligarh division, alongside Aligarh, Hathras and Kasganj, and lies on the plains of the upper Ganga–Yamuna doab.

Etah and Kasganj
Kasganj was once part of the wider Etah area and now has its own code, UP 87. If an older vehicle from Kasganj town shows UP 82, it was probably registered before the Kasganj office began issuing numbers.
Reading UP 82 plates
UP 82 appears on private cars, two-wheelers, tractors and goods vehicles alike. The code is the same for each class; only the plate colour and series show whether it is private or commercial.
Which district has the UP 87 district name code?
The UP 87 district name answer is Kasganj. Kasganj district, earlier called Kanshiram Nagar, sits in Aligarh division and is made up of three tehsils: Kasganj, Patiyali and Sahawar. Its headquarters is Kasganj town, which is also listed as the office location.
The old name on papers
Some older documents still carry the name Kanshiram Nagar. Forms today use Kasganj, so pick that spelling from the district drop-down when you apply for a licence or registration service online.
Kasganj among its neighbours
To the south-west is Etah (UP 82), and to the north lies Badaun (UP 24) in Rohilkhand. The codes jump between regions because numbers were given in blocks by area, not in a single line from west to east.
What is the UP 95 district name?
The UP 95 district name is Mahoba. Mahoba district is in Chitrakoot division in the Bundelkhand area of southern Uttar Pradesh, and its headquarters is Mahoba city. In the 2011 census it had 875,958 people, the smallest population of the 75 districts then.

Alha-Udal Nagari
Mahoba is also known as Alha-Udal Nagari, after the folk heroes linked to the town.
UP 95 beside UP 91
Hamirpur (UP 91) borders Mahoba, and both belong to the Bundelkhand block that runs from UP 90 to UP 96. If a plate says UP 95, the owner registered the vehicle at the Mahoba office, not at Hamirpur or Banda.
Which district does the UP 96 district name code belong to?
The UP 96 district name is Chitrakoot. The office location appears as Chitrakoot Dham in the published list, while the jurisdiction is Chitrakoot district. UP 96 is the highest number in the current Uttar Pradesh series, so it often appears last in any printed code chart.
Chitrakoot and Chitrakoot Dham
“Chitrakoot Dham” is also the name of the division that includes Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba and Chitrakoot. On a plate, though, UP 96 points only to Chitrakoot district, and the other three districts keep codes of their own.
Near the Madhya Pradesh border
Chitrakoot lies on the state border, so you will see UP 96 and MP plates side by side. The letters, not the digits, tell you which state registered the vehicle.
Where is the UP 70 RTO?
The UP 70 RTO is in Prayagraj, and it serves Prayagraj district. Prayagraj, formerly and still widely called Allahabad, is the headquarters of the most populous district in Uttar Pradesh and the seat of the Allahabad High Court, so UP 70 is one of the busiest codes in the state.
More on the Prayagraj office
Services, rush periods and planning a visit are covered in our guide to the Allahabad RTO code. Here we keep to what UP 70 means on a plate and where it sits among the state’s codes.
Prayagraj’s neighbours
Kaushambi (UP 73), Fatehpur (UP 71) and Pratapgarh (UP 72) surround Prayagraj, and they share the 70s block. Bhadohi (UP 66) and Mirzapur (UP 63) lie further east in the 60s block.
Is the UP 70 RTO code the same as Allahabad?
Yes. The UP 70 RTO code is the same code that Allahabad vehicles always carried. The city and district were renamed Prayagraj, but the code number did not change, so older Allahabad-registered vehicles and new Prayagraj ones share UP 70.
Searching under the new name
Online forms and district drop-downs now show Prayagraj. If you search for “Allahabad” and find nothing, try the new name. Your old RC remains valid even if it prints the earlier name.
Old RC, same number
A rename does not trigger re-registration. The registration number stays the same for the life of the vehicle unless the owner applies for a change, for example when moving to another state.
Which district uses the UP 12 RTO?
The UP 12 RTO is Muzaffarnagar, the office for Muzaffarnagar district in western Uttar Pradesh. The district sits between Meerut and Saharanpur, and it once also covered the area that became Shamli district, which today has its own code, UP 19.
Muzaffarnagar and Shamli
Shamli district was carved out of Muzaffarnagar on 28 September 2011, first as Prabudh Nagar, and was renamed Shamli in July 2012. Vehicles registered in the Shamli area after its office opened use UP 19.
On the Delhi–Dehradun route
Muzaffarnagar lies on the main road north to Haridwar and Dehradun. You will see UP 12 next to UK plates from Uttarakhand, which uses its own code series after the state split in 2000.
Which city has the UP 80 RTO?
The UP 80 RTO is in Agra. It is the registering office for Agra district, the headquarters of Agra division, which also includes Firozabad, Mainpuri and Mathura.
More on the Agra office
If you need to visit the office for a registration or licence task, see our separate guide to the Agra RTO, which covers that office in more depth.
Agra division codes
The division’s other codes are UP 83 for Firozabad, UP 84 for Mainpuri and UP 85 for Mathura. Aligarh division next door uses UP 81, 82, 86 and 87.
What is the UP 46 district name?
The UP 46 district name is Shravasti. The office and jurisdiction are both listed as Shravasti district, in the north-eastern part of the state near the Nepal border.
Shravasti’s neighbours
Bahraich (UP 40) and Balrampur (UP 47) share Shravasti’s borders. Gonda (UP 43) lies to the south. These codes make up the Devipatan belt within the 40s block.
Not to be confused with UP 64
Some people confuse Shravasti with Sonbhadra, which uses UP 64 and has its office at Robertsganj. The two are at opposite ends of the state, so check the two digits carefully.
Where is the UP 15 RTO?
The UP 15 RTO is in Meerut, and it serves Meerut district. Meerut is the headquarters of Meerut division, which takes in Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Bulandshahr, Baghpat and Hapur.
Meerut division in codes
The division’s codes are UP 13 Bulandshahr, UP 14 Ghaziabad, UP 15 Meerut, UP 16 Noida, UP 17 Baghpat and UP 37 Hapur. They are the plates you see most on roads into Delhi from the east.
Meerut and Baghpat
Baghpat district, west of Meerut along the Yamuna, has its own code, UP 17. A vehicle from Baghpat town should normally show UP 17, though older ones may show the Meerut code.
What is the UP 32 RTO code?
The UP 32 RTO code is the code for Lucknow, the state capital, covering Lucknow district. Lucknow is one of the largest offices in Uttar Pradesh, so UP 32 is among the most common UP codes. The published list also notes a Trans Gomti area office in Lucknow.

Lucknow’s central location
Lucknow sits among Barabanki (UP 41), Unnao (UP 35), Raebareli (UP 33), Sitapur (UP 34) and Hardoi (UP 30). These codes fall in the 30s and 40s block that covers Awadh.
Office details
For the Transport Nagar office and its services, see our guide to the RTO Lucknow office at Transport Nagar. Our UP 32 district name guide covers the code’s history and series in more detail.
Is the Lucknow RTO code only UP 32?
The main Lucknow RTO code is UP 32. Wikipedia’s list gives one number for Lucknow district with a note about the Trans Gomti area. One insurer list writes the Trans Gomti office as UP 32A; we could not confirm that from the state’s own pages.
What UP 32A would mean
Where a letter is added to the office number, it forms part of the code itself. If you see UP 32A on a plate, search the full number on Vahan to see which Lucknow office holds the record.
Government and city vehicles
Large cities often have series set aside for state vehicles. We have not found a public source that sets out Lucknow’s reserved series, so check the RC rather than guessing from the letters.
Which city uses the UP 65 RTO code?
The UP 65 RTO code belongs to Varanasi, the office for Varanasi district in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi is the main city of the Purvanchal region, and UP 65 plates appear widely across the eastern districts and on routes towards Bihar.

Varanasi’s code neighbours
Chandauli (UP 67), Bhadohi (UP 66) and Jaunpur (UP 62) border Varanasi. Ghazipur (UP 61) lies to the east. All of them belong to the 60s block for the Varanasi and Mirzapur areas.
Where Bhadohi registers
Bhadohi district’s office is listed at Gyanpur, which is why some charts write “UP 66 Gyanpur” while others write “Bhadohi”. Both point to the same district.
Where is the UP 22 RTO?
The UP 22 RTO is in Rampur, and it serves Rampur district in the Rohilkhand area. The published list notes that UP 22G is used for government vehicles and UP 22T for commercial vehicles, so these letters after the digits carry extra meaning at this office.
Rampur among Rohilkhand codes
Rampur sits between Moradabad (UP 21) and Bareilly (UP 25). The Rohilkhand codes run from UP 21 to UP 27, covering Moradabad, Rampur, Amroha, Badaun, Bareilly, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur.
Reading UP 22T
A plate such as UP 22T followed by a series and number marks a commercial vehicle registered at Rampur, according to the published annotation. It still needs a yellow plate if it carries passengers or goods for hire.
What does the full UP RTO code list from UP 11 to UP 96 look like?
The UP RTO code list runs from UP 11 Saharanpur to UP 96 Chitrakoot, with 76 numbers in use in the main published table. Each district has one listed code. The table below gives the office location and district for every code; confirm a code on Vahan before you depend on it.

Two offices called Akbarpur
Two codes share the office name Akbarpur: UP 45 for Ambedkar Nagar and UP 77 for Kanpur Dehat. They are different towns in different districts, so always read the district column as well as the office.
Use the finder for other states
If a plate does not start with UP, the state letters tell you where to look. Type the letters into the decoder below to see the state, then go to that state’s list.
Which western UP codes run from UP 11 to UP 20?
The western block of the UP code list runs from UP 11 Saharanpur to UP 20 Bijnor. It covers the Saharanpur and Meerut divisions, the most densely trafficked part of the state near Delhi, Haryana and Uttarakhand. UP 18 is the one number missing from this block in the main list.
Saharanpur division
Saharanpur division uses UP 11 Saharanpur, UP 12 Muzaffarnagar and UP 19 Shamli. Shamli’s code is out of sequence because the district was created long after the original numbers were given out.
Which Rohilkhand codes run from UP 21 to UP 27?
The Rohilkhand block runs from UP 21 Moradabad to UP 27 Shahjahanpur. It covers the Moradabad and Bareilly divisions in north-central UP. Sambhal district, carved from this area and headquartered at Bahjoi, received UP 38 rather than a number in the 20s.
Moradabad’s special letters
The list notes UP 21G for government vehicles and UP 21N for commercial vehicles at Moradabad. Rampur uses G and T in the same way, as covered above.
Bareilly and Pilibhit
Bareilly uses UP 25 and Pilibhit UP 26. Our UP 14 district guide covers another group of nearby codes, including Bulandshahr’s UP 13, if you are working through the western and Rohilkhand lists together.
Which central UP codes run from UP 30 to UP 47?
The central block covers the Lucknow, Ayodhya and Devipatan divisions, from UP 30 Hardoi to UP 47 Balrampur. Amethi (UP 36), Hapur (UP 37) and Sambhal (UP 38) fill numbers in the late 30s because they are newer districts.
The Ayodhya division
Ayodhya division uses UP 42 Ayodhya, UP 44 Sultanpur, UP 45 Ambedkar Nagar, UP 41 Barabanki and UP 36 Amethi. Amethi’s headquarters is Gauriganj, even though the code is listed under Amethi.
The Devipatan belt
Devipatan division, in the north-east, uses UP 40 Bahraich, UP 43 Gonda, UP 46 Shravasti and UP 47 Balrampur. Lakhimpur Kheri, further west, uses UP 31.
Which eastern UP codes run from UP 50 to UP 67?
The eastern block runs from UP 50 Azamgarh to UP 67 Chandauli, covering Gorakhpur, Basti, Azamgarh, Varanasi and Mirzapur divisions. These Purvanchal districts border Bihar and Nepal, so their plates are common on routes to Patna and the border crossings.
The Gorakhpur and Basti codes
Gorakhpur uses UP 53, Deoria UP 52, Kushinagar UP 57 (office at Padrauna) and Maharajganj UP 56. In Basti division, Basti is UP 51, Siddharth Nagar UP 55 and Sant Kabir Nagar UP 58 (office at Khalilabad).
The Mirzapur and Varanasi codes
Mirzapur uses UP 63 and Sonbhadra UP 64, with its office at Robertsganj. Varanasi division takes UP 61, 62, 65 and 67, while Ballia (UP 60) and Mau (UP 54) belong to Azamgarh division.
Which Prayagraj and Kanpur codes run from UP 70 to UP 79?
The 70s block covers Prayagraj division and the Kanpur area, from UP 70 Prayagraj to UP 79 Auraiya. Kanpur Nagar, the large industrial city, uses UP 78, and the rural Kanpur Dehat district uses UP 77 with its office at Akbarpur.
Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat
People from the Kanpur area often ask why two codes exist. UP 78 belongs to the city district and UP 77 to Kanpur Dehat; they are separate districts with separate registering offices.
Etawah, Kannauj and Farrukhabad
West of Kanpur, Etawah uses UP 75, Kannauj UP 74, Farrukhabad UP 76 and Auraiya UP 79. Kaushambi, in Prayagraj division, uses UP 73, with its office at Manjhanpur.
Which Agra and Aligarh codes run from UP 80 to UP 87?
The 80s block covers Agra and Aligarh divisions, from UP 80 Agra to UP 87 Kasganj. Four of this page’s keyword codes, 80, 82, 85 and 87, sit in this block.
Agra division
Agra division uses UP 80 Agra, UP 83 Firozabad, UP 84 Mainpuri and UP 85 Mathura.
Aligarh division
Aligarh division uses UP 81 Aligarh, UP 82 Etah, UP 86 Hathras and UP 87 Kasganj. Hathras sits between Aligarh and Mathura, which is why UP 85 and UP 86 plates appear together.
Which Bundelkhand codes run from UP 90 to UP 96?
The last block covers Bundelkhand, from UP 90 Banda to UP 96 Chitrakoot. It includes the Jhansi and Chitrakoot divisions in the south of the state, bordering Madhya Pradesh. There are seven codes in this block and no gaps between them.
Jhansi division
Jhansi division uses UP 92 Jalaun, UP 93 Jhansi and UP 94 Lalitpur.
Chitrakoot division
Chitrakoot division uses UP 90 Banda, UP 91 Hamirpur, UP 95 Mahoba and UP 96 Chitrakoot.
Why does the UP list start at UP 11?
The UP list starts at UP 11 because UP 1 to UP 10 were allocated to hill districts that became part of Uttarakhand when it was carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 9 November 2000.

Which numbers are missing from the UP list?
In the main published table, the numbers 18, 28, 29, 39, 48, 49, 59, 68, 69, 88 and 89 are not assigned to any district. Most gaps sit at the end of each regional block, which suggests numbers were kept spare for new districts, though we have not found an official statement explaining the gaps.
What to do with a missing number
If a plate uses a number from this list, do not assume it is fake. It may be a newer office or an error in published lists. Search the complete number on Vahan to see the registering authority.
UP 18 in particular
UP 18 is the one gap that commercial sites most often fill, with Greater Noida. We have logged this for re-verification and will update the table if an official source confirms it.
What do the G, N and T letters after a UP code mean?
According to the published list, G after UP 21 or UP 22 marks government vehicles, while N at Moradabad and T at Rampur mark commercial vehicles. For most other UP codes the list gives no such letters, and the letter series after the digits simply runs in order.
How can you check which UP office registered a vehicle?
You can check which UP office registered a vehicle by reading the two digits after UP and matching them with the table above. For an official answer, search the full registration number in a Vahan-based search, which names the registering authority on its result screen.
- Note the two digits. Read the number right after UP on the plate, for example 16 in UP 16 AB 1234.
- Match the digits. Find that number in the UP code list on this page to see the office and district.
- Search on Vahan. Enter the full registration number in a Vahan or mParivahan search to see the official registering authority.
- Confirm the office. For an address or timings, check the UP Transport Department site or call the office listed there.
Free and official
Looking up a code is free. The national Vahan service and the mParivahan app are run by MoRTH and NIC. Do not pay an agent or app to tell you what a code means. Our guide to RTO vehicle information explains each field a search returns.
Protect personal data
Official searches mask owner details. Any site promising the full owner name and phone number for a fee is not using the official process, so do not share OTPs or payment details with it.
What work does a UP RTO or ARTO office handle?
A UP RTO or ARTO office handles vehicle registration, transfer of ownership, RC duplicates, address changes, driving and learner licences, permits, fitness checks and road tax for its area. Many of these services now start online through Vahan or Sarathi, with a visit only for checks.
| Service | Where it starts | Visit usually needed for |
|---|---|---|
| New registration | Dealer, on Vahan | Rarely; dealer handles it |
| Ownership transfer | Vahan online form | Document check if asked |
| Learner licence | Sarathi online | Depends on online test option |
| Driving licence | Sarathi online | Driving test |
| Fitness of commercial vehicle | Vahan online | Vehicle inspection |
| Address change on RC | Vahan online | Rarely |
RTO and ARTO
An RTO is a Regional Transport Office; an ARTO is an Assistant Regional Transport Office. Many UP districts have an ARTO that reports to an RTO at division level, but both use their own district code on plates.
Fees and forms
Fees differ by service and vehicle class and are shown on the Vahan or Sarathi screen before you pay. We do not list them here; check the official fee screen for the current amount.
How do you find the address of a UP RTO office?
The safest way to find a UP RTO office address is the UP Transport Department website, which lists offices by district, or the office details shown in Vahan and Sarathi when you book an appointment. We do not publish addresses or phone numbers that we cannot confirm from an official source.
Why we leave out addresses
Offices move and phone numbers change. Copying them from private sites risks sending you to the wrong place, so we point to the official list instead. Our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide explains the state department’s online services.
Before you travel

Do you need a new number when you move to another UP district?
No. Moving within Uttar Pradesh does not require a new registration number. You update the address on the RC through Vahan, and the vehicle keeps its original code. A UP 14 car can stay UP 14 even if the owner moves to Lucknow.
Moving to another state
Moving out of Uttar Pradesh is different. After a set period in the new state, the owner may need to re-register and get that state’s number. Rules vary, so check with the new state’s RTO.
The BH series option
Eligible employees who move between states often can choose the BH (Bharat) series instead. Our RTO guide explains how state codes, district codes and the BH series fit together.
Which UP codes are seen most around Delhi NCR?
The UP codes you see most around Delhi NCR are UP 14 Ghaziabad, UP 16 Noida, UP 13 Bulandshahr, UP 15 Meerut, UP 17 Baghpat and UP 37 Hapur. Shamli (UP 19) is also part of the NCR, though its plates are less common in Delhi itself.
| Code | District | Relation to Delhi |
|---|---|---|
| UP 14 | Ghaziabad | Eastern border, core NCR |
| UP 16 | Gautam Buddha Nagar | South-eastern border, core NCR |
| UP 37 | Hapur | East of Ghaziabad |
| UP 15 | Meerut | Division headquarters |
| UP 17 | Baghpat | North-east, along the Yamuna |
| UP 13 | Bulandshahr | South-east of Noida |
Why UP plates fill Delhi roads
Many people live in Ghaziabad or Noida and work in Delhi, so UP 14 and UP 16 vehicles cross the border daily. They are registered in UP even though they spend much of the day in Delhi.
Challans across the border
A vehicle can receive challans from Delhi or UP traffic police. Each challan is linked to the registration number, so it follows the vehicle wherever its code was issued.
What are the common mistakes when reading UP plate codes?
The most common mistakes are mixing up UP 14 and UP 16, looking for old district names such as Allahabad or Faizabad, assuming the code shows where the owner lives, and trusting a single unofficial list.

Renamed districts
Allahabad is now Prayagraj (UP 70) and Faizabad is now Ayodhya (UP 42). The codes did not change with the names, so an old RC and a new one show the same digits.
District headquarters with different names
Several districts have offices in towns with other names: Sambhal at Bahjoi, Kushinagar at Padrauna, Sonbhadra at Robertsganj and Kaushambi at Manjhanpur. Read both columns of the list.
Did new districts such as Hapur and Shamli get new codes?
Yes. Newer districts received their own codes when their offices opened: Shamli UP 19, Hapur UP 37, Sambhal UP 38 (office at Bahjoi) and Amethi UP 36. These numbers sit inside existing blocks rather than at the end, which is why they look out of order.
| District | Code | Carved from or earlier name |
|---|---|---|
| Shamli | UP 19 | Carved from Muzaffarnagar, 2011 (first named Prabudh Nagar) |
| Hapur | UP 37 | Earlier called Panchsheel Nagar |
| Sambhal | UP 38 | Earlier called Bhimnagar |
| Kasganj | UP 87 | Earlier called Kanshiram Nagar |
| Amethi | UP 36 | Headquarters at Gauriganj |
How reliable are online UP code lists?
Online UP code lists are useful but not official. Most copy Wikipedia or each other, and some add codes such as UP 18 or UP 32A that we could not confirm. The registering authority shown on a Vahan search is the official word for any single vehicle.

How we built this table
Our table follows Wikipedia’s list of RTO districts, checked in October 2026, with district details from each district’s article. The UP Transport Department site did not load from our test machine, so we have logged the list for re-verification.
