UP 16 district name, UP 32 district name and the codes around them

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 25 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

The UP 16 district name is Gautam Buddha Nagar, the district served by the Noida RTO, and UP 32 is Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh has 75 districts grouped into 18 divisions, and nearly every district has its own office number between UP 11 and UP 96. Numbers UP 01 to UP 10 are no longer issued in UP, because those hill districts now belong to Uttarakhand.

Key takeaways

  • UP 16 belongs to Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida, Greater Noida, Dadri, Jewar) and UP 32 to Lucknow.
  • Uttar Pradesh has 75 districts in 18 divisions; a 76th district was announced in 2025 but we found no final notification.
  • UP 78 is Kanpur Nagar while UP 77 is Kanpur Dehat, a common mix-up.
  • The Mau RTO code is UP 54, and Hathras, not Chandauli, uses UP 86.
  • UP 01 to UP 10 are defunct in UP; those districts moved to Uttarakhand in November 2000.
  • Code lists here come from secondary sources, so confirm any vehicle on Vahan before you rely on it.

What is the UP 16 district name?

The UP 16 district name is Gautam Buddha Nagar, the district that holds Noida and Greater Noida. Vehicles registered at the Noida RTO carry UP 16 on the plate. People often search for “Noida district”, but on forms the official name is Gautam Buddha Nagar.

UP 16 district name Noida and UP 32 Lucknow shown with four other busy UP codes
Six of the codes people look up most often, with the office each one points to.

Towns covered by UP 16

The district takes in Noida, Greater Noida, Dadri, Jewar and Dankaur, plus the YEIDA area along the Yamuna Expressway. A car bought by someone living in any of these places is normally registered under UP 16, because they all sit inside one revenue district.

How the district was formed

Gautam Buddha Nagar was created in 1997 from parts of two districts. The Dadri and Bisrakh blocks came from Ghaziabad, and the Dankaur and Jewar blocks came from Bulandshahr. That is why older vehicles from the area can carry UP 14 or UP 13 numbers instead.

Office versus headquarters

The district headquarters is Greater Noida, but the RTO most people visit is in Noida. Both belong to the same district, so the code stays UP 16 either way. For office services and documents, see our guide to the RTO Noida.

Which district is UP 32 on a number plate?

The UP 32 district name is Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. A plate that reads UP 32 followed by series letters and four digits was registered at the Lucknow RTO. Lucknow district also heads the Lucknow division, which groups six districts in central Uttar Pradesh.

Size of the Lucknow district

Lucknow had a population of about 45.9 lakh (4,589,838) at the 2011 Census, making it one of the four largest districts in the state by population. That volume of residents explains why UP 32 series letters run through so many combinations.

Where Lucknow vehicles are registered

Registration, transfer and fitness work for the district goes through the Lucknow RTO. Address, timings and counters are covered on our page about the RTO Lucknow office at Transport Nagar, so this page sticks to what the code itself means.

The Lucknow division happens to use a neat run of six consecutive numbers.

Codes next to UP 32

The rest of the Lucknow division uses the numbers on either side: UP 30 Hardoi, UP 31 Lakhimpur Kheri, UP 33 Raebareli, UP 34 Sitapur and UP 35 Unnao. If you see one of these in Lucknow traffic, the owner is most likely commuting from a neighbouring district.

How do you find the district for any UP number plate?

You can decode any Uttar Pradesh plate in four quick steps. Read the state letters, read the two-digit office number, match that number against a district list, then confirm the full number on Vahan. The series letters and last four digits do not point to a place.

  1. Read the state letters. UP at the start means the vehicle was registered in Uttar Pradesh.
  2. Read the two digits. The number after UP, such as 32 or 16, is the office that issued the registration.
  3. Match the code to a district. Use the 75-district table further down this page to find the district.
  4. Confirm on Vahan. Search the full registration number on Vahan or mParivahan if you need the official record.

When you need owner details

The code only tells you the district. To see the registration date, fuel type or insurance status, use a registration number search on the national portal. Our guide to bike no check and vehicle details shows which details are public.

Which district is UP 78?

The UP 78 district name is Kanpur Nagar, the urban district centred on Kanpur city. It belongs to the Kanpur division along with five other districts. Kanpur Nagar counted about 45.8 lakh people (4,581,268) in 2011, almost level with Lucknow.

Do not confuse UP 78 with UP 77

UP 77 is Kanpur Dehat, the rural district next door, with its office at Akbarpur. The two names look alike in drop-down menus, so double-check which one your address belongs to before you fill a transfer or address-change form.

More about UP 78

If you only need to know where a UP 78 vehicle comes from, the answer is Kanpur. For office details and services, see the page that answers UP 78 kaha ka number hai.

Which district is UP 70?

The UP 70 district name is Prayagraj, the district once called Allahabad. It is the most populous district in Uttar Pradesh, with about 59.5 lakh residents (5,954,391) in 2011. Prayagraj also gives its name to a division that includes Fatehpur, Kaushambi and Pratapgarh.

The temporary Kumbh district

On 2 December 2024 the state declared the Maha Kumbh area of Prayagraj a temporary 76th district for the festival. It was later merged back, so it never received its own code and UP 70 still covers the whole district.

Old name, same code

Vehicles registered before the rename show Allahabad on older RCs, but the code did not change. Our guide to the Allahabad RTO code covers the office itself.

UP 15 district name: is it Meerut?

Yes. The UP 15 district name is Meerut, the large district north-east of Delhi that also heads the Meerut division. Meerut had about 34.4 lakh people (3,443,689) at the 2011 Census, and its plates are a familiar sight on the Delhi–Meerut Expressway.

Meerut division RTO codes including UP 15 Meerut, UP 16 Noida and UP 37 Hapur
Hapur broke the number sequence because it became a district only in 2011.

Meerut’s neighbours on the plate

The Meerut division runs from UP 13 Bulandshahr and UP 14 Ghaziabad through UP 15 Meerut, UP 16 Gautam Buddha Nagar and UP 17 Baghpat, then jumps to UP 37 for Hapur. The jump happens because Hapur became a district much later than the others.

Ghaziabad has its own page

UP 14 is Ghaziabad, a separate district with heavy registrations of its own. We cover it, together with its neighbours, in our UP 14 district name guide.

Which district uses UP 80?

UP 80 is Agra, the district famous for the Taj Mahal and the headquarters of the Agra division. Agra had about 44.2 lakh residents (4,418,797) in 2011. Its code sits at the start of a run of western UP numbers that covers the Braj area.

Agra division codes

The Agra division groups four districts: Agra (UP 80), Firozabad (UP 83), Mainpuri (UP 84) and Mathura (UP 85). Aligarh (UP 81) and Etah (UP 82) were part of the same division until Aligarh division was split off on 17 April 2008.

Office details

Office location and services for this code are on our page for the RTO Agra. Use that page for anything beyond the district name.

Which district is UP 53?

UP 53 is Gorakhpur, the largest city of north-eastern Uttar Pradesh and the headquarters of the Gorakhpur division. The district counted about 44.4 lakh people (4,440,895) in 2011. Plates from here are common across the routes to Nepal and Bihar.

Gorakhpur division codes

The division also covers Deoria (UP 52), Maharajganj (UP 56) and Kushinagar (UP 57), whose office is at Padrauna. Kushinagar’s code is easy to miss because the office town and the district have different names.

A new district may come from here

A proposed district called Pharenda (Anand Nagar) would join three tehsils from Gorakhpur and Maharajganj. It remains a proposal, so UP 53 still covers all of Gorakhpur district today.

UP 50 district name: where is it?

The UP 50 district name is Azamgarh, in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Azamgarh is the headquarters of its own division and had about 46.1 lakh residents (4,613,913) in 2011, slightly more than Lucknow. Its code opens the 50s block used for eastern districts.

The Azamgarh division

The division was formed on 15 November 1994 from parts of the Gorakhpur and Varanasi divisions. It groups three districts: Azamgarh (UP 50), Mau (UP 54) and Ballia (UP 60). Their codes are not consecutive because they were assigned before the division existed.

Why Azamgarh matters for Mau owners

Mau was part of Azamgarh until 1988. Very old vehicles from the Mau area can therefore show UP 50 rather than UP 54, depending on when they were first registered.

Which district has UP 62?

UP 62 is Jaunpur, a district in the Varanasi division known for its historic bridge over the Gomti. Jaunpur had about 44.9 lakh people (4,494,204) in 2011, putting it among the most populous districts in the state.

Table of six eastern UP district codes from UP 50 to UP 63 by division
Codes in the 50s and 60s cluster in the far east of the state.

Varanasi division codes

The Varanasi division covers Varanasi (UP 65), Ghazipur (UP 61), Jaunpur (UP 62) and Chandauli (UP 67). Varanasi city itself uses UP 65, which surprises readers who expect the division headquarters to have the lowest number.

A proposed Shahganj district

Residents of northern Jaunpur have demanded a separate Shahganj district. No such district has been created, so all of Jaunpur, Shahganj included, stays under UP 62.

UP 60 district name: which town?

The UP 60 district name is Ballia, the easternmost district of Uttar Pradesh, on the border with Bihar. Ballia had about 32.4 lakh residents (3,239,774) in 2011 and belongs to the Azamgarh division, alongside Azamgarh and Mau.

Ballia and Bihar plates

Because Ballia sits where the Ganga and Ghaghara meet the Bihar border, you will see UP 60 and BR plates side by side on local roads. A BR plate there means a Bihar registration, not a Ballia one.

The 60s block

UP 60 starts a run that continues with UP 61 Ghazipur, UP 62 Jaunpur, UP 63 Mirzapur, UP 64 Sonbhadra (Robertsganj), UP 65 Varanasi, UP 66 Bhadohi (Gyanpur) and UP 67 Chandauli.

Which district is UP 23?

UP 23 is Amroha, a district in the Moradabad division. It was carved out of Moradabad in April 1997 from the Amroha, Dhanora and Hasanpur tehsils. Amroha had about 18.4 lakh people (1,840,221) in 2011.

The old name: Jyotiba Phule Nagar

From 1997 until 2012 the district was officially called Jyotiba Phule Nagar, and some forms and RCs still show that name. The code did not change, so a UP 23 vehicle from either period comes from the same area.

Moradabad division neighbours

Amroha shares its division with Moradabad (UP 21), Rampur (UP 22), Bijnor (UP 20) and Sambhal (UP 38). Moradabad and Rampur also use letter suffixes, such as 21G for government vehicles.

What is the UP 54 district name?

The UP 54 district name is Mau, a district in the Azamgarh division. Mau became a separate district on 19 November 1988, when it was carved out of Azamgarh. Its headquarters is the town of Maunath Bhanjan, which most people simply call Mau.

Population and position

Mau had about 22.1 lakh residents (2,205,968) in 2011, on a compact area of 1,713 sq km. Its neighbours include Azamgarh, Ballia and Ghazipur, so UP 50, UP 60 and UP 61 plates are common on its roads.

Mau on forms

Address forms sometimes list the district as Mau and the town as Maunath Bhanjan. Both mean the same place; choose Mau from the district drop-down on Vahan or Sarathi.

What is the Mau RTO code?

The Mau RTO code is UP 54. A vehicle registered at the Mau office gets a number that starts with UP 54, followed by the series letters and a four-digit number. The office serves the whole of Mau district.

UP 54 Mau, UP 83 Firozabad and four more Uttar Pradesh district codes on plates
Each of these districts is served by a single main code.

How UP 54 plates look

A typical number reads UP 54 AB 1234. Vehicles made on or after 1 April 2019 come with a high security registration plate (HSRP) fitted by the dealer, but the code itself is the same on old and new plates.

Older Mau vehicles

A vehicle registered before Mau became a district would have been issued under Azamgarh. If an old RC shows UP 50 for a Mau owner, that is normal and does not need correcting.

Which district is UP 83?

UP 83 is Firozabad, the district known as India’s glass-bangle town, in the Agra division. Firozabad became a district on 5 February 1989 and had about 25.0 lakh people (2,498,156) in 2011.

Firozabad’s place in the 80s block

The 80s run covers the Braj and Agra belt: UP 80 Agra, UP 81 Aligarh, UP 82 Etah, UP 83 Firozabad, UP 84 Mainpuri, UP 85 Mathura, UP 86 Hathras and UP 87 Kasganj.

Other UP 83 searches

Readers often look up UP 83 together with western codes such as Bulandshahr’s. Our UP 13 RTO code guide covers that cluster in detail.

Which district is UP 33?

UP 33 is Raebareli (also written Rae Bareli), a district in the Lucknow division south-east of the capital. It had about 29.0 lakh residents (2,903,507) in 2011. Its code follows Lucknow’s UP 32 directly.

Raebareli and Amethi

Amethi uses UP 36. Amethi district, with its headquarters at Gauriganj, was formed on 1 July 2010, so it is much younger than Raebareli and now sits in the Ayodhya division rather than the Lucknow one.

Where Raebareli fits

Raebareli is one of six districts in the Lucknow division, together with Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri, Lucknow, Sitapur and Unnao, whose codes run from UP 30 to UP 35.

UP 37 district name: why is it new?

The UP 37 district name is Hapur, one of the newest districts in Uttar Pradesh. It was created on 28 September 2011 from the Hapur, Garhmukteshwar and Dhaulana tehsils of Ghaziabad, and sits in the Meerut division.

From Panchsheel Nagar to Hapur

The district was first named Panchsheel Nagar and was renamed Hapur on 23 July 2012. Documents from that short window may carry the old name, but the area and the code are the same.

Why the code is out of order

All the Meerut division numbers from UP 13 to UP 17 were already taken by 2011. Hapur therefore received a free number further up the list, UP 37, which is why it sits among Lucknow-area codes.

Which district is UP 63?

UP 63 is Mirzapur, the headquarters district of the Vindhyachal division in south-eastern Uttar Pradesh. Mirzapur had about 25.0 lakh people (2,496,970) in 2011 and is known for the Vindhyachal temple and its carpet trade.

Vindhyachal division codes

The division has three districts: Mirzapur (UP 63), Sonbhadra (UP 64), with its office at Robertsganj, and Bhadohi (UP 66), with its office at Gyanpur. Two of the three are better known by their town names than their district names.

Sonbhadra is huge

Sonbhadra, the UP 64 district next door, covers 6,905 sq km, the second-largest area in the state after Lakhimpur Kheri.

Which district is UP 31?

UP 31 is Lakhimpur Kheri, the largest district in Uttar Pradesh by area at 7,680 sq km. Its headquarters is Kheri, and the RTO office is listed at Lakhimpur. The district lies in the Lucknow division and touches the India–Nepal border.

Dudhwa and the Terai

Much of the district is Terai land with forests and the Dudhwa reserve, so travel distances to the headquarters are long. Residents have asked for a separate Gola Gokarannath district for that reason, but none has been created.

Population

Lakhimpur Kheri had about 35.6 lakh residents (3,564,544) in 2011, spread thinly at around 520 people per sq km.

Which district is UP 61?

UP 61 is Ghazipur, a district on the Ganga in the Varanasi division. Ghazipur had about 36.2 lakh residents (3,620,268) in 2011. Its code sits between Ballia’s UP 60 and Jaunpur’s UP 62 in the eastern block.

Ghazipur’s neighbours

To the east is Ballia (UP 60), to the west Varanasi (UP 65) and to the north Mau (UP 54). Plates from all four are common on the roads around Ghazipur town.

Bihar border traffic

Like Ballia, Ghazipur borders Bihar, so BR registrations are frequent locally. Only plates that begin with UP 61 were registered at the Ghazipur office.

Which district is UP 86?

UP 86 is Hathras, in the Aligarh division, according to the RTO list we checked. Hathras became a district on 3 May 1997 and had about 15.6 lakh people (1,564,708) in 2011. Chandauli, a different district in the east, uses UP 67.

The Aligarh division

The division, split from Agra on 17 April 2008, covers Aligarh (UP 81), Etah (UP 82), Hathras (UP 86) and Kasganj (UP 87). All four codes sit in the 80s block.

Check before you rely on it

If a source you trust disagrees, search the full registration number on Vahan. The registering authority shown there is the final word. A plate that shows UP 86 but a Chandauli address on the RC simply means the owner moved after registration.

Which district was UP 01?

UP 01 is not used in Uttar Pradesh today. The RTO list we checked marks UP 01 to UP 10 as defunct, because those codes belonged to districts that are now in Uttarakhand. Several third-party directories link UP 01 to Almora, which uses UK 01 today.

What we could not confirm

We found no official transport department record of the old UP 01 mapping, only aggregator sites. Treat the Almora link as likely but unconfirmed, and check an old RC directly if the history matters to you.

Today’s equivalent

The Uttarakhand transport department lists its Almora office as UK 01. A vehicle registered there now gets a UK number, never a UP one.

What was the UP 04 district name?

UP 04 is also a defunct code from the hill districts that left Uttar Pradesh in 2000. Sources disagree on which district it covered, and we found no official record. Rather than guess, we suggest you read the registering authority on the vehicle’s RC or Vahan record.

Why sources disagree

Third-party lists give different districts for the old UP 01 to UP 10 numbers, and some mix up the old UP numbers with the UA and UK series that followed. With no official table to settle it, we are not stating a district for UP 04.

Where it shows up

You will only see UP 04 on very old vehicles, often ones that have since been re-registered elsewhere. A modern vehicle with UP 04 on its plate deserves a check on Vahan.

Is the UP 04 RTO code still issued?

No. The UP 04 RTO code is not issued to new vehicles. After Uttarakhand was formed on 9 November 2000, its offices moved to their own series, and Uttar Pradesh’s list now effectively starts at UP 11 Saharanpur.

What an old UP 04 owner should do

Nothing changes automatically. The registration number stays valid for the life of the vehicle unless it is re-registered in another state. If you move the vehicle, follow the no-objection and re-registration process of the new state.

Searching an old UP 04 number

Old records may not all be on Vahan. If a search returns nothing, contact the office that now holds the old file, which is usually the Uttarakhand office for that district.

Why are UP 01 to UP 10 not used any more?

UP 01 to UP 10 were allocated to the hill districts of old Uttar Pradesh. When Uttarakhand became a separate state on 9 November 2000, those districts and their transport offices went with it, so the codes no longer exist in UP.

Timeline showing why UP 01 and UP 04 district name searches lead to Uttarakhand
Old plates with UP 01 to UP 10 can still be seen on very old vehicles.

The UA and UK series

Uttarakhand vehicles first carried UA and now use UK, with the office numbers rebuilt from 01. That is why UK 01 and UP 01 can both point towards Almora on different-age vehicles.

What it means for searches

If you are reading an old document and see UP 01 to UP 10, the vehicle almost certainly came from what is now Uttarakhand. For the current state, start your search with the UK series.

Which of these UP codes share a division?

The 21 codes on this page fall into ten of UP’s 18 divisions. Grouping them this way helps when a code looks unfamiliar: neighbouring numbers usually mean neighbouring districts, except where a newer district such as Hapur was slotted in later.

How many district in UP?

Uttar Pradesh has 75 districts. That is the highest number for any Indian state, and it reflects UP’s position as the most populous state in the country. The districts are grouped into 18 divisions for revenue and general administration.

Stat card answering how many district in UP: 75 districts in 18 divisions
A proposed 76th district was announced in 2025; the count stays 75 until it is notified.

Who runs a district

Each district is headed by a District Magistrate (DM), an IAS officer who also acts as Collector and District Election Officer. A Regional or Assistant Regional Transport Officer handles vehicle registration and licences at district level.

Same answer in Hindi

If you searched in Hindi, our UP me kitne jile hai guide gives the same count with the district names in Hindi.

How many district in Uttar Pradesh after the 76th district plan?

The official count is still 75 districts as of October 2026. A 76th district named Kalyan Singh Nagar was announced in October 2025, to be formed from the Atrauli and Gangiri tehsils of Aligarh and the Dibai tehsil of Bulandshahr, but we found no final gazette notification.

What would change for vehicles

If the new district is notified, it would most likely get its own office and code later. Until then, vehicles from Atrauli and Gangiri stay under UP 81 Aligarh and those from Dibai under UP 13 Bulandshahr.

Other proposals

Local demands also exist for districts such as Baheri, Aonla, Gola Gokarannath, Nanpara, Pharenda and Shahganj. None of them has been created, so do not pick them on any form.

Spellings to watch

Names have several spellings: Budaun or Badaun, Baghpat or Bagpat, Raebareli or Rae Bareli, Balrampur or Balarampur. Pick whichever spelling the portal’s drop-down offers; they all mean the same district.

Renamed districts

Ayodhya was Faizabad, Prayagraj was Allahabad, Amroha was Jyotiba Phule Nagar and Hapur was Panchsheel Nagar. Old RCs may carry the former name, which is still valid on that document.

How many division in UP?

Uttar Pradesh has 18 divisions, often called mandal in Hindi. Each division is a group of three to six districts under a Divisional Commissioner. They are used for revenue, police ranges and planning, but transport codes are given district by district.

Newest divisions

Several divisions were split from older ones in the 1990s and 2000s: Azamgarh in November 1994, Basti in June 1997, Chitrakoot and Devipatan in November 1997 and Aligarh in April 2008.

Adding it up

Add the right-hand column and you get 75, matching the district count. If you ever see a division list that totals differently, it is either out of date or includes a proposed district.

Devipatan’s headquarters

Most divisions share a name with their headquarters district. Devipatan is the exception: its headquarters is Gonda, so it can be hard to find if you only search by city.

District vs division in UP: what is the difference?

A district is the basic unit of administration in Uttar Pradesh, and a division is a group of districts. The DM runs a district; a Divisional Commissioner supervises several DMs. For vehicles, the district matters far more, because each district has its own RTO code.

Comparison of a UP district and a UP division to answer how many division in UP
Divisions group districts; the RTO code follows the district, not the division.

Which one to put on a form

RC, licence and address forms ask for the district. You will rarely be asked for the division, except on some state recruitment or revenue forms.

Below the district

Districts are split into tehsils and then villages. A tehsil is never a separate RTO code, though some large districts have extra transport sub-offices. For the general idea across India, see our guide to district name.

How many jila in UP?

There are 75 jila in UP. Jila (जिला) is simply the Hindi word for district, so the answer matches the official district count. Some searches use “zila” or “zilla”; they mean the same thing and refer to the same 75 units.

Jila, tehsil and gaon

A jila contains several tehsil, and each tehsil contains many gaon (villages). On transport forms, you only need the jila name and your PIN code; the tehsil appears on some address-proof documents.

Jila names in Hindi

Hindi spellings sometimes differ from English ones, for example Raebareli (रायबरेली) or Shravasti (श्रावस्ती). Use the English spelling on Vahan, which works in English.

How many states in UP?

There are no states inside Uttar Pradesh. UP is itself one of India’s 28 states. The searches “how many states in UP” and “how many states in Uttar Pradesh” usually mean districts (75) or divisions (18), so those are the numbers to use.

Where the confusion comes from

In Hindi, rajya means state and mandal means division. Mixing the two words up is easy, which is why people sometimes ask how many rajya are in UP when they mean mandal.

UP’s neighbours

Uttar Pradesh borders Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar, plus Nepal to the north. These are separate states and territories, not parts of UP.

How much district in UP compared with other states?

UP’s 75 districts are far more than any other state. Madhya Pradesh comes second with 55, and Rajasthan third with 41, according to the Wikipedia district list we checked in October 2026. The figures move as states create new districts.

Why UP needs so many

UP had about 19.98 crore people at the 2011 Census, more than most countries. Smaller districts keep the distance to the DM, courts and RTO manageable for residents.

Many codes, one state

Because almost every district has its own office, UP uses over 70 active RTO codes, from UP 11 to UP 96.

Why are some numbers missing from the UP code list?

The list we checked runs from UP 11 to UP 96 but skips several numbers, such as UP 18, 28, 29, 39, 48, 49, 59, 68, 69, 88 and 89. Gaps appear because codes were assigned in regional blocks, and not every block was filled.

Common mistakes when matching an up district code to a name, with fixes
Most wrong answers come from old district names or neighbouring numbers.

Gaps can be filled later

A missing number can be assigned later to a new office or district, which is how Hapur got UP 37. If you see a plate with a number that is not on our list, it may be newer than the source; check it on Vahan.

Sub-series inside one code

Some districts use letter suffixes for special categories. Moradabad uses 21G for government and 21N for commercial vehicles, and Rampur uses 22G and 22T. These are still the same district.
