UP 43 district name: Gonda and the plates it registers

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 7 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

The up 43 district name is Gonda, the district in north-eastern Uttar Pradesh whose headquarters also heads the Devipatan division. Any vehicle first registered at the Gonda transport office carries UP 43, whether the owner lives in Gonda city, Colonelganj, Mankapur, Tarabganj or a village. Balrampur, carved out of Gonda in 1997, now uses UP 47.

Key takeaways

  • UP 43 is Gonda district; the Gonda RTO code covers the whole district, not only the city.
  • Gonda has four tehsils (Gonda, Colonelganj, Mankapur, Tarabganj) and 16 blocks, all under UP 43.
  • Balrampur split from Gonda in May 1997 and registers vehicles as UP 47.
  • Devipatan division codes are UP 40 Bahraich, UP 43 Gonda, UP 46 Shravasti and UP 47 Balrampur.
  • The code shows the first registering office, not where the owner lives today.
  • Check any UP 43 number on Vahan or mParivahan, because code lists on websites are secondary.

What is the UP 43 district name?

The UP 43 district name is Gonda. In the published list of Uttar Pradesh registering offices, number 43 belongs to the Gonda office, and its jurisdiction is Gonda district. A car, motorcycle, tractor or bus first registered there therefore shows UP 43 right after the state letters on its plate.

Gonda at a glance

Gonda city is the district headquarters and also the seat of the Devipatan division. The city lies roughly 125 km north-east of Lucknow, and its railway station, Gonda Junction (code GD), sits on the Lucknow–Gorakhpur line.

What the two digits do not prove

UP 43 records only where a vehicle entered the registration database. It does not show where the driver lives now or who owns the vehicle today. A bike bought in Gonda and later driven in Lucknow keeps the same number.

What is the Gonda RTO code?

The Gonda RTO code is UP 43. People searching for it usually want to confirm a plate they have seen, or to know which number a new purchase will get. If your address is anywhere in Gonda district, your vehicle will normally be registered with this code.

Buying a new vehicle in Gonda

Dealers in Gonda file the registration on the Vahan system for the buyer’s address. When the address falls inside the district, the number allotted starts with UP 43, followed by the series that the office is issuing at the time.

Which tehsils and blocks share the UP 43 RTO code?

The UP 43 RTO code covers all four tehsils of Gonda district: Gonda, Colonelganj, Mankapur and Tarabganj. The district is further split into 16 development blocks, and none of them has a separate registration number in the list we checked.

The four tehsils

Gonda tehsil holds the headquarters town, while Colonelganj, Mankapur and Tarabganj are named after their own market towns. Owners in all four register under the same office number, so the tehsil never shows on the plate.

The sixteen blocks

The blocks are Babhanjot, Belsar, Chhapia, Colonelganj, Haldharmau, Itiathok, Jhanjhari, Katra Bazar, Mankapur, Mujehana, Nawabganj, Pandri Kripal, Paraspur, Rupaidih, Tarabganj and Wazirganj. A tractor bought by a farmer in Paraspur or Wazirganj gets UP 43 just like a car in the city.

Village or town, the office number on the plate stays the same.

Which towns in Gonda carry UP 43 plates?

Towns listed for the district include Gonda, Colonelganj, Katra, Khargupur, Mankapur and Nawabganj. Vehicles registered by residents of any of them carry UP 43. There is no extra suffix that marks the town, so you cannot tell Nawabganj from Gonda city by looking at the plate.

Nawabganj is not a tehsil

Nawabganj appears as a town and a block, but it is not one of the four tehsils. That matters on online forms: when a portal asks for the tehsil, pick the one your village or ward falls under, as shown on your Aadhaar or ration card address.

Where is Gonda district on the Uttar Pradesh map?

Gonda sits in the north-east of Uttar Pradesh, in the Awadh region. It shares borders with seven districts: Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Barabanki and Ayodhya. Each has its own transport office code.

Neighbours inside Devipatan

Balrampur, Shravasti and Bahraich lie on the Nepal side of Gonda. All three share the Devipatan division with Gonda.

Neighbours in other divisions

Ayodhya, Barabanki, Basti and Siddharthnagar complete the ring. These belong to other divisions, so their codes (UP 42, UP 41, UP 51, UP 55) sit outside the Devipatan group.

How big is the district behind UP 43?

Gonda covers about 4,003 sq km and had 3,433,919 people in the 2011 Census. That makes it the most populous Devipatan district after Bahraich, and the second largest by area after Balrampur. Its effective literacy rate was 58.71%, below the state figure of 69.72%.

Why do Balrampur plates no longer say UP 43?

Balrampur was carved out of the northern part of Gonda in May 1997. Once it had its own transport office, new registrations there moved to UP 47. That is why a vehicle from Balrampur town today usually shows UP 47, while an old one might still carry UP 43.

Older numbers stay valid

Redrawing a district boundary does not cancel existing registrations. A vehicle first numbered in Gonda before 1997 keeps its original UP 43 mark even if its owner’s village is now in Balrampur.

Earlier boundary changes

Gonda’s own history is older. It was run together with Bahraich after 1801, became a separate district when Awadh was annexed in 1856, and ceded a tract of land to Nepal on 7 January 1875, long before registration codes existed.

Which codes make up the Devipatan division?

The Devipatan division, headquartered at Gonda, has four districts and four codes: UP 40 Bahraich, UP 43 Gonda, UP 46 Shravasti and UP 47 Balrampur. The numbers are not consecutive, because codes were handed out over several decades as districts were created.

Shravasti and Bahraich

Shravasti, with headquarters at Bhinga, is the smallest district in the group by area. Bahraich (UP 40) is the most populous. Both border Gonda, so their plates are common on the Gonda–Bahraich road.

How this fits the state list

Uttar Pradesh codes run from UP 11 to UP 96. Lucknow, the state capital, uses UP 32; read more on our page about the UP 32 district name. The full code finder is on the RTO codes hub.

How do you read a Gonda number plate?

A Gonda plate has four blocks, for example UP 43 BT 4521. “UP” is the state, “43” is the Gonda office, “BT” is the letter series, and “4521” is the number within that series. The series runs up to three letters and skips I and O to avoid confusion with 1 and 0.

Plate colours

A white plate with black characters marks a private vehicle; a yellow plate with black characters marks a commercial one such as a taxi or goods carrier. The office code stays UP 43 for both.

How can you check a UP 43 vehicle online?

To confirm a UP 43 vehicle, search the full registration number on the Vahan citizen portal or the mParivahan app. The result names the registering authority, so you can see Gonda written out in official words rather than relying on any list, including this one.

  1. Open the official search. Go to the Vahan citizen services portal or open the mParivahan app.
  2. Enter the full number. Type the whole registration number without spaces.
  3. Pass the verification. Complete the captcha or OTP step the portal shows.
  4. Read the authority field. Confirm the office is Gonda and note the fitness and insurance dates.

What the record shows

A public search shows the model, fuel type, registration date and masked owner name, which is enough to confirm the Gonda office.

Decode an unknown state first

What work does the Gonda transport office handle?

Like other district offices in Uttar Pradesh, the Gonda office handles vehicle registration and licence services for residents of the district. Most applications start online on Vahan or Sarathi, and the office is visited for inspection, biometrics or a driving test where the service requires it.

Vehicle services

These include new registrations, transfer of ownership, address change on the RC, hypothecation entries, duplicate RCs and no-objection certificates for vehicles moving out of the state.

Licence services

Learner and permanent driving licences, renewals and duplicates for Gonda residents are processed here. Test slots are booked online, so check the Sarathi portal before travelling.

Where can you find the Gonda office address and timings?

We could not verify the current address, phone number or timings of the Gonda transport office from any source we checked, so we do not print them here. Use the office directory on the UP Transport Department website, or the office details shown on Vahan and Sarathi when you book a service.

Before you travel

Confirm the appointment slot and the documents list on the portal, since many services now need a booked slot. Carry originals plus self-attested copies.

Does a UP 43 number change when the owner moves?

No, not inside Uttar Pradesh. A move from Gonda to another UP district changes only the address on the RC, which must be reported within 30 days under Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The UP 43 number stays.

Moving to another state

If the vehicle is kept in another state for more than 12 months, Section 47 of the Act requires a new registration mark from that state’s office, so a UP 43 car moved to Delhi would eventually get a DL number.

Which nearby codes get mixed up with UP 43?

The codes most often confused with UP 43 are UP 42 Ayodhya and UP 47 Balrampur. Ayodhya is the next number and a bordering district, while Balrampur used to be part of Gonda. UP 41 Barabanki, UP 51 Basti and UP 55 Siddharthnagar also border Gonda and appear on the same roads.

Quick way to remember

Think “42 Ayodhya, 43 Gonda, 47 Balrampur”: the next-door district first, then Gonda, then the district that split from it.
