UP 52 district name and the Deoria number plate explained
The up 52 district name is Deoria, a district of the Gorakhpur division in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Owners living in any of its five tehsils (Deoria Sadar, Salempur, Rudrapur, Barhaj and Bhatpar Rani) get UP 52 plates. Next door, Kushinagar uses UP 57, Gorakhpur UP 53, Mau UP 54 and Ballia UP 60. A Vahan search confirms the registering office of any vehicle.
Key takeaways
- UP 52 is the Deoria RTO code, used for the whole of Deoria district.
- Five tehsils, Deoria Sadar, Salempur, Rudrapur, Barhaj and Bhatpar Rani, all share it.
- Kushinagar was carved out of Deoria on 13 May 1994 and now registers vehicles as UP 57 at Padrauna.
- Deoria touches Gopalganj (BR 28) and Siwan (BR 29) in Bihar, so Bihar plates are common locally.
- The letters after 52 are a running series, not a tehsil or village marker.
- Always confirm a UP 52 vehicle with a Vahan or mParivahan search before you buy or report it.

What is the UP 52 district name?
The UP 52 district name is Deoria, a district in the far east of Uttar Pradesh, close to the Bihar border and part of the Gorakhpur division. A plate that starts with UP 52 tells you the vehicle was first registered by the transport office at Deoria town, which covers the whole district.

The short version
Two letters and two digits carry the meaning: UP for the state, 52 for Deoria. Every other character on the plate is a counter, so nothing beyond those four tells you about the vehicle’s home.
Where UP 52 plates travel
You will meet UP 52 vehicles on the Gorakhpur road, around Salempur and Barhaj, and across the border in Siwan and Gopalganj, where many Deoria families trade, study and visit relatives.
UP 52 kaha ka number hai?
UP 52 Deoria ka number hai. Jis gaadi ki plate par UP 52 likha ho, woh Deoria district ke transport office mein registered hui thi. Shehar ho ya gaon, Deoria ke paanchon tehsil ke liye ek hi code chalta hai.
Deoria ke gaon wale bhi UP 52
Number owner ke pate ke hisaab se milta hai. Lar, Bhatni ya Gauri Bazar jaise kisi gaon mein rehne wale ki nayi bike par bhi UP 52 hi aayega.
Bihar border ke paas confusion
Bhatpar Rani ke aas-paas Bihar ki BR 28 aur BR 29 gaadiyan bhi khoob dikhti hain. Woh Gopalganj aur Siwan ki hain, Deoria ki nahi.
Which office issues the Deoria RTO code?
The Deoria RTO code, UP 52, belongs to the transport office at Deoria, the district headquarters. The official-style lists we checked map UP 52 to the Deoria office with jurisdiction over Deoria district. Dealers file new registrations on the national Vahan system, so most buyers receive the number without visiting.
What the office decides
The office approves registrations, transfers and permits for owners with a Deoria district address. If your address is in Padrauna or Gorakhpur, a different office handles your file.
How a number gets allotted
Vahan hands out the next free number in the current UP 52 series once the dealer’s papers are approved. Buyers who want a special number can bid for it through the choice-number option.
What does the UP 52 RTO code mean on a car or bike?
On any vehicle class, the UP 52 RTO code means the same thing: the Deoria office registered it. A motorcycle, a family car, a tractor and a goods truck from the district all show 52 after UP. The vehicle type changes the plate colour and series, not the office number.
Commercial and transport vehicles
Autos, buses and goods carriers registered in Deoria carry UP 52 on yellow plates. The code rule for them is identical to a private white-plate car.
Electric two-wheelers
Battery scooters sold by Deoria dealers also take UP 52 if the buyer gives a local address. Only the green plate colour sets them apart.
Which tehsils share the UP 52 RTO code?
According to the district administration website, Deoria has five tehsils: Deoria Sadar, Salempur, Rudrapur, Barhaj and Bhatpar Rani. Vehicles registered by residents of all five use the same UP 52 RTO code, because the plate follows the owner’s district, never the tehsil.

| Tehsil | Uses UP 52? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Deoria Sadar | Yes | District headquarters tehsil |
| Salempur | Yes | South-east, towards Bihar |
| Rudrapur | Yes | Also a Nagar Panchayat town |
| Barhaj | Yes | Spelt Berhaj on the district site |
| Bhatpar Rani | Yes | Close to the Siwan border |
No tehsil codes on plates
Uttar Pradesh plates have no separate tehsil suffix. A Barhaj car and a Deoria Sadar car can only be told apart through the registration record.
Spelling differences
The district site writes Berhaj and BhatparRani, while other sources use Barhaj and Bhatpar Rani. They are the same places.
Which blocks and towns come under UP 52?
Deoria is divided into 16 development blocks, and every one of them sits inside the UP 52 area. Its urban centres include two Nagar Palika Parishads, Deoria and Gaura Barhaj, plus Nagar Panchayats such as Rudrapur, Bhatni Bazar, Lar and Gauri Bazar.
The 16 blocks
The district lists Baitalpur, Bankata, Barhaj, Bhagalpur, Bhaluwani, Bhatni, Bhatparrani, Deoria Sadar, Desahi Deoria, Gauri Bazar, Lar, Pathardeva, Rampur Karkhana, Rudrapur, Salempur and Tarkulwa.
Smaller towns
Other Nagar Panchayats named for the district include Rampur Karkhana, Bhatpar Rani, Majhauli Raj and Salempur Patherdeva. None has a number of its own.
How big is the district behind UP 52?
Deoria counted 31,00,946 people (3,100,946) in the 2011 Census. Its area is given as 2,540 sq km by the district website and 2,560 sq km by Wikipedia. That is a dense, largely rural district with a steady flow of two-wheeler registrations.
| Measure | Deoria district (UP 52) |
|---|---|
| Headquarters | Deoria |
| Division | Gorakhpur |
| Tehsils | 5 |
| Blocks | 16 |
| Area | 2,540 sq km (district site); 2,560 sq km (Wikipedia) |
| Population (2011 Census) | 3,100,946 |
| Literacy (2011) | 73.53% |
Rivers across the district
The Ghaghara, Rapti and Chhoti Gandak are the main rivers. Ballia and Mau lie to the south, across the Ghaghara side of the district.
A slight female majority
The 2011 figures show 1,013 females for every 1,000 males, one of the details recorded in the district’s Census profile.
Is Deoria part of the Gorakhpur division?
Yes. Deoria belongs to the Gorakhpur division, which also includes Gorakhpur, Kushinagar and Maharajganj. A division is an administrative group of districts under a commissioner; it does not share a vehicle code. Each district in it keeps a separate office and number.
What the division means for you
The division is useful for placing Deoria on a map, but routine registration stays with the Deoria office and never moves to Gorakhpur.
Seventy-five districts, one rule
Uttar Pradesh is split into 75 districts across 18 divisions. Our page on UP me kitne jile hai lists them all with their divisions.
Which codes does the Gorakhpur division use?
The four districts of the division use UP 52, UP 53, UP 56 and UP 57. Deoria holds 52, Gorakhpur 53, Maharajganj 56 and Kushinagar 57. Numbers 54 and 55 in between went to Mau and Siddharthnagar, which belong to other divisions.

The Gorakhpur neighbour
UP 53 is the code of the division’s headquarters district. For that office, see our guide to the gorakhpur rto code and its services.
Kushinagar’s office town
UP 57 is issued at Padrauna, even though the district is called Kushinagar. Our page on the kushinagar rto code covers that office in brief.
Which districts border Deoria, and what are their plate codes?
Deoria has six neighbours: Kushinagar to the north, Gorakhpur to the west, Mau and Ballia to the south, and Gopalganj and Siwan in Bihar to the east. Four plates you see locally begin with UP, two with BR.
| Neighbouring district | Direction | Code | Office |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kushinagar | North | UP 57 | Padrauna |
| Gorakhpur | West | UP 53 | Gorakhpur |
| Mau | South | UP 54 | Mau |
| Ballia | South | UP 60 | Ballia |
| Gopalganj (Bihar) | East | BR 28 | Gopalganj |
| Siwan (Bihar) | East | BR 29 | Siwan |
Southern neighbours in another division
Mau and Ballia sit in the Azamgarh division, not Gorakhpur. Their codes, 54 and 60, reflect that separate grouping.
Ballia across the Ghaghara
Ballia sits to the south of Deoria and registers its own vehicles under UP 60 at the Ballia office, so its plates are a separate series.
Why does Padrauna have its own number now?
Before 1994 the Padrauna area was part of Deoria district. On 13 May 1994 it became a separate district called Padrauna, renamed Kushinagar on 19 June 1997. With its own administration it also got its own office and the code UP 57, issued at Padrauna.

Deoria’s own origin
Deoria itself was carved out of Gorakhpur district: Wikipedia dates it to 16 March 1946, though its infobox shows 1952. So the area was once covered by Gorakhpur too.
Old numbers from the north
A vehicle registered in the Padrauna area before the split can still carry an older Deoria number. Registration marks do not change when a boundary moves.
Why are Bihar plates so common on Deoria roads?
Deoria’s whole eastern edge runs along Bihar’s Gopalganj and Siwan districts. Trade, family ties and daily commuting cross that line constantly, so BR 28 and BR 29 plates are a normal sight in Bhatpar Rani, Salempur and Deoria town itself.
Reading a BR plate
BR stands for Bihar, and the two digits name its office. For the full list of codes in that state, see our bihar rto code guide.
Bihar residents with UP plates
A family that moved from Deoria to Siwan may keep UP 52 for a while. The rules on how long are explained in the section on leaving the state below.
Where does UP 52 sit among the codes from UP 50 to UP 58?
UP 52 belongs to a run of eastern codes in the 50s. The sequence reads 50 Azamgarh, 51 Basti, 52 Deoria, 53 Gorakhpur, 54 Mau, 55 Siddharthnagar, 56 Maharajganj, 57 Kushinagar (Padrauna) and 58 Sant Kabir Nagar (Khalilabad). All of them lie in Purvanchal.
Two offices with different names
Watch for Padrauna for UP 57 and Khalilabad for UP 58. Directories may list the office town or the district name, which can look like two different places.
The wider list
For codes across Uttar Pradesh and every other state, start from our RTO codes and Vahan hub.
How do you read a UP 52 number plate?
Take UP 52 AB 1234 as an example. UP is the state, 52 is the Deoria office, AB is the series and 1234 is the vehicle’s position inside that series. Only the first two blocks describe a place; the rest is a counter kept by the office.
- Read the state letters. UP shows the vehicle was registered in Uttar Pradesh.
- Read the office digits. 52 points to the Deoria registering office.
- Skip the series for location. Letters such as AB only mark the running series.
- Check the official record. Search the full number on Vahan or mParivahan to see the registering authority.

Decode another state’s plate
Always two digits
The office part is exactly two digits. If you wrote down “UP 5” or “UP 520”, you probably merged the code with the series.
What do the letters after UP 52 tell you?
The letters form a running series of one to three letters, followed by a number from 1 to 9999. When the office fills a series, it opens the next one. The letters roughly show when a vehicle was registered, never which tehsil, village or owner it belongs to.
Letters that are skipped
The series avoids I and O because they resemble 1 and 0. A plate noted as “UP 52 OI” has almost certainly been misread.
Choice numbers stay in the series
A fancy number like 0786 or 0001 comes from a Deoria series as well. Paying for it changes the last four digits, not the code.
How can you check a UP 52 vehicle online?
Search the full number on the Vahan citizen services site or in the mParivahan app. The public result shows the registering authority, so you can confirm a UP 52 vehicle really came from Deoria before buying it second-hand. The basic search costs nothing.
Entering the number
Type the plate without spaces, exactly as printed. Our guide to vehicle details explains every field on the result screen.
When the office looks wrong
If the result names an office other than Deoria for a UP 52 plate, treat the vehicle with caution and ask the seller for the original RC.
What work does the UP 52 RTO handle?
The UP 52 RTO handles vehicle and licence work for Deoria district: new registrations, ownership transfers, address changes on the RC, duplicate RCs, hypothecation entries and removals, fitness and permits for transport vehicles, and driving licence tests. Most of it starts online.
Vehicle applications
Transfers and hypothecation removal are filed on Vahan. The office may ask you to bring the vehicle or original papers after you book a slot.
Taxes and permits
Commercial owners pay road tax and permit fees through the state’s online services. We do not list amounts here; check the current rates on the UP Transport Department site.
How do Deoria residents get a driving licence?
Learner and permanent licences for Deoria residents run through the national Sarathi licence portal. You apply online, upload documents, book a test slot and then attend the Deoria office or its test track for the driving test.
Learner licence first
The learner test is a short road-rules quiz. Once you pass, you must wait the required period before booking the driving test.
Licence numbers and the code
Indian licence numbers usually begin with the state letters and an office code, so a Deoria DL will typically show UP 52 near the start. Check your own card to confirm.
Where is the UP 52 office listed with current contact details?
Check the UP Transport Department website or the Parivahan office directory, which list the Deoria office with its current contacts. We have not printed an address, phone number or timings, because we could not confirm them from an official source when we checked.
Why we leave it blank
Office details shift with moves and staff changes. On a YMYL subject like transport documents, a wrong address wastes a reader’s day, so we point to the source.
The district site
The deoria.nic.in website carries the district’s own contact directory, which can help you reach the administration if the transport listing is unclear.
Does a UP 52 vehicle keep its number inside Uttar Pradesh?
Yes. Moving from Deoria to Gorakhpur, Lucknow or any other district of the state does not change the number. The vehicle stays UP 52 for as long as it is registered in Uttar Pradesh. What you update is the address on the RC.
Changing the address
Apply on Vahan with proof of the new address. Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act asks owners to report the change within 30 days.
Selling to a buyer elsewhere in UP
A buyer in Kanpur or Varanasi takes over the same UP 52 number. Only the owner’s name and address change on the record.
What happens when a UP 52 vehicle moves to Bihar or another state?
If a UP 52 vehicle is kept in another state for more than 12 months, Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act requires a new registration mark there. A Deoria car shifted to Siwan for good would eventually get a BR 29 number.
Getting clearance first
Owners normally apply for a no objection certificate from the Deoria office first. Our guide to the noc certificate explains the process.
Short visits are fine
Weekend trips to Gopalganj or a few months’ work in Patna need no re-registration, as long as the RC, insurance and PUC are valid.
Which mistakes do people make with the Deoria RTO code?
Most errors come from Kushinagar, which was part of Deoria until 1994, and from the Bihar border. People expect Padrauna plates to read UP 52, mix up 52 and 53, or think the series letters show a tehsil. The two-digit code and a Vahan search settle each case.

One digit makes a difference
UP 52, UP 53 and UP 57 are three different offices. When you report an accident or a challan, write down every character, or the complaint may reach the wrong district.
The plate is not the address
A UP 52 car parked in Gorakhpur may belong to someone who moved there. The code tells you the registering office, not where the owner lives today.
How current is the UP 52 information here?
We checked the code mapping and district facts in October 2026. Tehsils and blocks come from the Deoria district website; the code list and district history come from public secondary sources. For any single vehicle, the Vahan record remains the authority.
What we relied on
The RTO district list, the Deoria and Kushinagar district articles, and deoria.nic.in for tehsils, blocks and area.
If something changes
A new office or code would show up on Vahan first. Check there, or ask the Deoria office, before relying on any printed list.
