By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 7 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

The up 66 district name is Bhadohi, the carpet-weaving district between Varanasi and Prayagraj. Its registering office sits at Gyanpur, the district headquarters, and covers the Aurai, Bhadohi and Gyanpur tehsils. The district was once called Sant Ravidas Nagar, but the code never changed. Neighbours use UP 62, UP 63, UP 65 and UP 70.

Key takeaways

  • UP 66 is Bhadohi district, with the registering office at Gyanpur.
  • All three tehsils, Aurai, Bhadohi and Gyanpur, share the single code.
  • Sant Ravidas Nagar is the district's former name, not a separate RTO.
  • Bhadohi was carved out of Varanasi district on 30 June 1994, so it no longer uses UP 65.
  • The letters after 66 are a running series and say nothing about the village.
  • A free Vahan search confirms which office registered any vehicle.

What is the UP 66 district name?

The UP 66 district name is Bhadohi, a small district on the north bank of the Ganga in eastern Uttar Pradesh, best known for hand-knotted carpets. A plate that opens with UP 66 was issued by the transport office for this district, which works from Gyanpur, the district headquarters.

Four characters that matter

On any Indian plate, the state letters and the two office digits carry the place. For Bhadohi that is UP 66, and every other block on the plate is just a counter the office keeps.

The smallest district in the state

Bhadohi is listed as the smallest district of Uttar Pradesh by area, yet it counted 1,578,213 people in the 2011 Census. Most owners live within easy reach of Gyanpur.

UP 66 kaha ka hai?

UP 66 Bhadohi jile ka code hai. Jis gaadi ki plate par UP 66 likha ho, woh Bhadohi district ke registering office, yani Gyanpur, mein registered hui thi. Car, bike, tractor ya truck, sab ke liye yahi niyam hai, chahe owner shehar mein rahe ya kisi gaon mein.

Carpet city ka number

Bhadohi ko “Carpet City of India” kaha jata hai. Carpet export se jude traders, weavers aur transporters ki gaadiyon par aksar UP 66 dikhta hai, kyunki unka registration isi jile mein hota hai.

Gaon ho ya qasba

Registration owner ke pate ke jile se tay hota hai. Suriyawan, Khamaria ya Aurai, jahan bhi aap rehte hon, Bhadohi jile ke andar code UP 66 hi rahega.

What is the Bhadohi RTO code?

The Bhadohi RTO code is UP 66. The national list of registering offices records the office as Gyanpur with jurisdiction over the whole of Bhadohi district. New registrations, transfers and RC updates for the district run through this office on the central Vahan system.

One code for the district

Some larger districts have more than one office number. Bhadohi does not: the list we checked shows a single code, UP 66, for all three tehsils.

How a new number is allotted

When a dealer in the district files the registration on Vahan, the system gives the vehicle the next free number in the current UP 66 series, unless the buyer bids for a choice number.

Is the UP 66 office at Gyanpur or Bhadohi town?

The office is at Gyanpur. The RTO list names Gyanpur, and the district article names it as headquarters, even though Bhadohi town is larger: it had 94,620 residents in 2011 against 45,808 in Gyanpur. Directories may still print “Bhadohi” as the office name.

Why the names get mixed

The district, its largest town and one tehsil are all called Bhadohi. When someone says “Bhadohi RTO”, they usually mean the district office, which works from Gyanpur.

Getting there

Bhadohi town lies about 45 km west of Varanasi and 82 km east of Prayagraj. The nearest railway station named for Gyanpur is Gyanpur Road, in Gopiganj.

Which tehsils and blocks use UP 66?

Bhadohi district has three tehsils, Aurai, Bhadohi and Gyanpur, and six development blocks. Residents of every tehsil and block register under UP 66, because the code follows the district of the owner’s address rather than any smaller unit.

Blocks are not on the plate

A tractor in Deegh block and a car in Gopiganj both show UP 66. The block, tehsil or police station never appears in the number.

Rivers that frame the district

The Ganga forms the south-western boundary, and the Varuna and Morva also flow through the district. The river edge is also the border with Mirzapur.

Is Sant Ravidas Nagar the same as Bhadohi?

Yes. Sant Ravidas Nagar was the district’s earlier name, given under the Mayawati government. On 6 December 2014 the state government resolved to restore the name Bhadohi. The territory and the registering office stayed the same, so the code has always been UP 66.

Old papers, same code

An RC or insurance policy printed years ago may show Sant Ravidas Nagar as the district. That is not an error, and it does not mean the vehicle came from a different office.

When did Bhadohi leave the Varanasi code?

Bhadohi became a district on 30 June 1994, carved from the western part of Varanasi district. Before that, its residents registered with Varanasi under UP 65. Once the new district had its own administration, a separate office and the number 66 followed.

Vehicles from before the split

A vehicle registered in the area before 1994 can still carry a Varanasi number. Moving a district boundary never changes an existing registration mark.

The sister code next door

Varanasi kept UP 65. Our page on the UP 65 district name covers that code, its tehsils and the rest of the Varanasi division.

Which districts border Bhadohi, and what are their codes?

Bhadohi touches four districts: Jaunpur to the north, Varanasi to the east, Mirzapur to the south and Prayagraj to the west. All four are in Uttar Pradesh and each has its own office, so their plates differ from UP 66 only in the two digits.

The Vindhyachal trio

Bhadohi shares the Vindhyachal division with Mirzapur (UP 63) and Sonbhadra (UP 64, office Robertsganj). The division groups districts; it never merges their codes.

How do you read a UP 66 number plate?

Take UP 66 BT 2468 as an example. UP is the state, 66 is the Gyanpur office, BT is the series and 2468 is the number within it. The place lives only in the first four characters; the remainder simply shows where in the queue the vehicle was registered.

  1. Read the state letters. UP shows the vehicle was registered in Uttar Pradesh.
  2. Read the office digits. 66 points to the Gyanpur office of Bhadohi district.
  3. Skip the series for location. Letters such as BT only mark the order in which numbers were issued.
  4. Confirm on Vahan. Enter the full number on Vahan or mParivahan to see the registering authority.

Series letters and skipped letters

The series can have one to three letters, followed by a number from 1 to 9999. I and O are not used, because they look like 1 and 0.

How can you check a UP 66 vehicle online?

Type the complete number, without spaces, into the Vahan citizen services search or the mParivahan app. The free result shows the registering office, vehicle class, fuel and validity dates, with the owner’s name partly masked. If the office is not Gyanpur or Bhadohi, recheck the plate.

Before you buy a used vehicle

Match the chassis and engine numbers on the RC with the vehicle itself, and confirm the office shown on Vahan matches UP 66.

What work does the Gyanpur registering office handle?

The Gyanpur office handles the usual registration and licensing work for Bhadohi district: new registrations, ownership transfers, RC address changes, duplicate RCs, hypothecation entries, fitness checks for goods and passenger vehicles, permits and driving licence tests. Most applications start online and need a visit only for inspection.

Vehicle services

Transfers, address updates and hypothecation removal are filed on Vahan. Upload documents first, then book a slot if the office wants the vehicle or originals.

Licence services

Learner and driving licences run through the Sarathi portal, and the driving test is booked online for the date and slot you choose.

Where is the current UP 66 office address listed?

The UP Transport Department website and the Parivahan office directory list the current address and contact details for the Gyanpur office. We do not print a street address, phone number or timings, because no source we checked in October 2026 gave verified details.

Why we leave it out

A wrong address on a YMYL topic wastes a trip. Pointing to the official list is safer than copying an unchecked directory.

Other codes in the state

For every Uttar Pradesh number and codes from other states, use our RTO codes and Vahan hub.

Does a UP 66 number change when the owner moves?

Within Uttar Pradesh, no. A UP 66 vehicle keeps its number after a move to Lucknow, Prayagraj or any other district; only the RC address changes, which Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act asks owners to report within 30 days.

Moving to another state

If the vehicle stays in another state for more than 12 months, Section 47 requires a new registration mark there, usually after a no objection certificate from Gyanpur.

Which mistakes do people make with UP 66 plates?

Most mix-ups come from the old name Sant Ravidas Nagar, the gap between the office town and the district name, and the close Varanasi code. Checking the two digits and the Vahan record settles nearly every case.

The old district name and the office town cause most of the confusion.

Confusing 65 and 66

UP 65 is Varanasi, UP 66 is Bhadohi. When reporting an accident or challan, note every character, since one digit changes the office.

Assuming the plate shows the home address

A UP 66 car in Varanasi may simply belong to someone who moved. The code shows the first registering office, not where the owner lives today.
